DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams opened their respective seasons on Monday with victories over the Burris Owls.
The seventh grade squad (1-0) edged the Owls 39-35, and the eighth graders had a 40-24 victory.
Spencer Caldwell poured in 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in leading the WJMS seventh graders. Tavin Wasson was second on the team with 11 points and eight boards while dishing a team-best seven assists. Skyler Bee contributed six points, Peyton Bennett chipped in four points, Dominick Newsome had two points and Gabe Goodspeed finished with one point.
Quinn Faulkner and Trenton Alexander had 17 and 10 points respectively to lead the eighth grade Eagles (1-0). Nick Street scored six points, Camden Harrison contributed four points and Kess McBride had three points.
Chief girls split
OSSIAN — East Jay’s girls basketball teams split with the Norwell Knights on Monday.
The EJMS eighth grade team lost 37-16, and the seventh graders won 35-21.
Rachel Muhlenkamp and Madison Dirksen led the Chief eighth graders with five points each. Andrea Jutte scored four points and Heaven Hambrock contributed two points.
Olivia Waters and Renna Schwieterman led the Chief seventh graders in the defeat. Waters had 14 points and Schwieterman added 13 points. Kylie

EJ 8th boys win
The East Jay eighth grade boys basketball team on Monday opened its year with a 35-23 win over the Norwell Knights.
East Jay’s seventh graders lost 38-25.
Ethan Dirksen led the EJMS eighth graders with a dozen points and Gavin Muhlenkamp was second on the team with seven points.
Bennett Weitzel paced the Chief seventh grade squad with 12 points, while Blake Bogenschutz added five points.
Stars sweep Braves
BERNE — The seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams at South Adams both won their season opener Monday against the Bellmont Braves.
The eighth grade Starfires won 42-29, and the seventh graders won 29-17.
Aidan Wanner and Trey Schoch both had 12 points to lead the SAMS eighth grade team. Parker Bryan had six points, while Jordan Hinshaw and Kaleb Stevens both had four points.
Josh Amstutz had five rebounds to lead the seventh grade squad. Matt Steiner had four rebounds and Brady Beall grabbed three boards. Scoring stats were not available for the seventh grade contest.
Outcalt wins beam
INDIANAPOLIS — Hannah Outcalt was first on the balance beam for the second time this season Saturday during the Let’s Get This Party Started Gymnastics Invitational at National Athletic Sports Center.
The Jay County High School freshman, competing in the 13-and-older Xcel Gold division, totaled 9.45 points to win beam. She scored 8.525 on vault to place third, was fourth on uneven bars with 8.25 and scored 8.75 on floor exercise for fifth.
Her all-around total of 34.95 was third.
