In her first two seasons, Katy Smeltzer earned spots at the national meet.
She’ll be going back as a junior.
Smeltzer, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, earned three NAIA national standards as a member of the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team as it competed in the Magnus Cup from Friday through Sunday at Cleveland State.
The junior earned “A” standards in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle events. In the latter, she was 44th — it was her best individual finish in a meet that included teams from NCAA Division I and II programs — with her time of 54.43 seconds. She had a time of 1 minute, 1.03 seconds in the 100 butterfly for another “A” standard.
Smeltzer was 46th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:21.9 to earn a “B” standard.
Additionally, she was 61st in the 50 freestyle while helping the 400 freestyle A relay place 14th, the 800 freestyle B relay finish 23rd, the 200 freestyle B relay end 31st and the 200 medley B relay place 32nd.

Competed for the Ball State University women’s swim team Saturday in a 164-136 win over Grand Valley State University.
Bader was first in both the 200-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley. She had a time of 2 minutes, 8.94 seconds to win the former, and finished the latter in 2:13.79.
She helped the 400 medley B relay finish as the runner-up.
Vormohr was second in both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle events, and helped the 400 medley A relay win with a time of 3:55.31. She swam the freestyle leg with a split of 54.02.
The cousins helped the 400 freestyle relay place second.

Had top-four finishes individually for the University of Findlay women’s swim team on Saturday as it split a double dual with Tiffin and Toledo.
Brette had the best finish as she was second in the 200-yard individual medley. She was also fourth in the 200 backstroke.
Ashton placed third in the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 100 butterfly while also helping a pair of relays. She swam the butterfly leg of the runner-up 400 medley A relay, and helped the 200 freestyle B relay place second.
The Oilers defeated Tiffin 236-35 and lost to Toledo 165-127.

Didn’t fare so well as the top-ranked 125-pounder, as the Indiana Tech wrestling team lost to University of the Cumberlands on Friday.
Miller, who was No. 1 in the NAIA and 3-1 on the season, lost to Hayden Lee by a 5-3 decision. He struck first with an escape in the second period, but fell behind 3-1 to Lee following an escape and a takedown in the third period.
The junior reversed Lee to knot the score at 3-all before Lee returned the favor.
Travis Sutter
Fort Recovery – 2016
Ran for the Ohio Northern University men’s cross country team as it competed in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.
Sutter finished the 8K course in 27 minutes, 23.43 seconds to place 269th overall out of 270 runners. He was sixth on the team for the Polar Bears, who totaled 456 points for 19th out of 32 teams.
North Central (Illinois) had two of the top three individual places as it won with a score of 57.

Scored for the Purdue University women’s swim team during the invitational it hosted Thursday through Saturday.
The sophomore was fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with her time of 2 minutes, 15.07 seconds, accounting for 15 points. Indiana University sophomore and Olympic gold medalist Lilly King won in 2:10.99.
Farlow was also part of the 400 freestyle D relay that finished 18th in 3:28.81. She swam the third leg in 51.87 seconds.
The Boilermakers scored 538 points for fourth. IU won the eight-team meet with 896.5 points.

Was two away from his season-high point total Friday for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team in a 78-73 loss to Lake Superior State.
He was 7-of-15 from the field, including 5-for-12 from beyond the arc, to finish with 19 points. He also had three rebounds and an assist in 34 minutes.
A day later, he had three points, two rebounds and an assist in a limited role as the NCAA Division II No. 20 Oilers (4-1) beat Miami-Hamilton 131-72.

Just missed double figures for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team as it held off Siena Heights 73-70 on Saturday to remain undefeated.
The senior forward was 4-of-8 from the field and made his only free throw to finish with nine points. He also had five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal for the Warriors (6-0).

The sophomore made all but one of her five shots from the field for eight points, grabbed two rebounds and dished an assist in a 61-41 win on Friday over IU-Southeast.
On Friday, she had six points — she made each of her four free throws — with career-high nine rebounds as the Foresters (6-1) defeated Wright State Lake Campus 78-40.

Made her collegiate debut for the Capital University women’s basketball team on Saturday in a 71-55 loss to Rochester.
The freshman missed the only shot she took from the field but recorded an assist in 10 minutes of play.
A day later, Kaiser scored her first career points as she was 1-of-2 from the field and split a pair of free throws to finish with three points. She also had three defensive rebounds as the Crusaders (1-1) beat Calvin College 63-55.

Played for the Wright State Lake Campus men’s basketball team in a pair of losses recently.
The freshman went scoreless on two shot attempts Friday in a 128-95 loss to Grinnell College. He also had a rebound and an assist in nine minutes of action.
On Saturday, he contributed six points on 2-of-3 shooting with a pair of free throws as the Lakers (1-7) loss to NAIA Division I No. 3 William Penn 134-69.

The 165-pound freshman dropped his match to Bryant Moore by a 9-7 decision, which cut the Spartans’ lead to 8-3.
