NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Will Homan nearly reached 300 yards for the second time in three weeks.
He would have likely eclipsed the mark, except that he had helped stake the Indians to such a large lead that he was sent to the bench for the bulk of the fourth quarter.
Homan’s 291 yards and three touchdowns Friday powered the Fort Recovery High School football team to a 38-7 blowout of the New Bremen Cardinals.
The Indians’ first drive of the game stalled out at midfield. When they got the ball back, there was no stopping Homan.
The senior, who churned out 317 yards on 25 carries in the Tribe’s Oct. 6 win over St. John’s, took a handoff from quarterback Clay Schmitz on the first play of the ensuing drive and didn’t stop running until he crossed the goal line. The 79-yard touchdown was the first of his three scoring runs of the evening, as he would cap the next FRHS possession with a 5-yard TD for a 14-0 lead.
Homan extended Fort Recovery’s 10-point intermission advantage to 24-7 when he took the fourth play of the second half 51 yards to the house. With the Tribe leading 31-7 after three periods, he carried just twice in the fourth before calling it a night and turning over rushing duties to Kody Shinabery.
Cade Wendel added 54 rushing yards on nine carries for the Indians, and Schmitz was an efficient 6-of-9 through the air for 43 yards.
Shinabery scored his first career TD on a 13-yard run late in the game, and Cobe Wendel booted a 34-yard field goal.
Kaden Will and Ethan Schoen shared the team high of 10 tackles as the FRHS defense held New Bremen (3-6, 1-6 Midwest Athletic Conference) to 200 total yards.
Nolan Bornhorst had 92 of those on 14 carries while also completing 8-of-16 passes, including and 11-yard touchdown to Avery Powers.
The Indians (5-4, 4-3 MAC) will close their regular season Friday as they host St. Henry. They would need a win over the Division VI No. 9 Redskins (6-3, 4-3 MAC) to have a chance at making the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
The Tribe was 10th in the most recent Division VI Region 20 computer points.
The top eight teams in each region advance to the postseason.
