The Jay County High School boys tennis team dipped to 1-4 on the season Thursday with a 5-0 loss to the Marion Giants.
Garrett Rodgers and Conner Benter were the only singles players to win a game against the Giants. Rodgers, Jay County’s No. 1 singles player, fell to Riley Worland 6-1, 6-0, and Benter lost to Vikram Oddiraju 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
Jay County’s No. 2 singles player Payton Heniser lost to Noah Lyons 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Ethan Myers and Xavier Ninde dropped their match to Jonathan Walts and Jack Fauser 6-0, 6-1, and the JCHS No. 2 doubles team of Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall lost to Ethan Eltzroth and Caleb Spitzer 6-0, 6-0.
The Jay County junior varsity team lost 5-2.
At No. 3 doubles, Ben Muhlenkamp and Christian Romero defeated Nihal Nagesh and John Flowers 8-5, and at No. 4 singles Gabe Blankenship won 8-7 (8-6) over Cole Madden.
JC falls to Raiders
SELMA — Jay County’s volleyball team lost to the host Wapahani Raiders on Thursday, 25-19, 25-11, 25-16.
Kaelyn Weaver, a JCHS senior, had eight kills against the Raiders, who won the Class 2A state championship in each of the last two seasons. Sarah Walter was second on the team with five kills, and Alana Kunkler chipped in two kills.
Chloe Trissel had seven digs, as Kendal Garringer and Walter added five digs apiece. Walter also had a team-high two blocks, while she and Maggie Pryor also had an ace.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team also lost, 25-9, 25-10.
Sara Hemmelgarn and Hallie Fields had the only kills for the Patriots as they totaled four and two respectively. Fields had a team-best five digs and one block.
JC, Norwell draw
OSSIAN — Jay County’s boys soccer team jumped out to a first-half lead but couldn’t keep it in a 2-2 draw with the host Norwell Knights on Thursday.
Jay County (1-4-2) scored twice in the first half after Daniel Fugiett and Korbin Auker both found the back of the net. The Patriots had a 2-0 lead at halftime, but allowed the Knights to score twice in the final 40 minutes to tie the score.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team lost, 1-0.
EJ boys first
DUNKIRK — The East Jay Middle School boys cross country team finished first in a four-team meet at West Jay on Thursday.
The Chiefs totaled 36 points to win, beating Adams Central by three points. Bluffton totaled 67 for third and West Jay was fourth with 93 points.
Adams Central’s girls won with 25 points, ahead of EastJay (41), West Jay (86) and Bluffton (104).
Tony Wood was the top EJMSrunner as he was third overall in 11 minutes. 46 seconds. Cameron Clark (fourth), Dustin Harris (sixth), Nico Minnich (11th) and Josh Monroe (12th)?also scored for the Chiefs.
In the girls race, Lydia Keihn led East Jay by finishing runner-up in 12:35. Lindy Wood (sixth), Rachel Heitkamp (ninth), Mara Bader (10th) and Azelia Smith (14th) also contributed to the EJMS team score.
West Jay results were not provided.
