HARTFORD CITY — Sophia Fugiett has a knack for finishing near the front.

On Saturday, she ran the fastest time of her career.

Fugiett, a Jay County High School freshman, was fourth overall and set a new career best as the Patriot girls cross country team finished eighth in the Blackford Invitational.

Huntington North totaled 42 points to win the team title. Mt. Vernon (Fortville) was runner up with 74 points and Frankton totaled 91 for third. Jay County had a score of 161.

Jay County’s boys placed seventh with 216 points. Mt. Vernon won with 62 points, edging Monroe Central by one point. Frankton (109) was third.

Fugiett was one of three freshmen to lead the JCHS girls. She crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 4.2 seconds, setting a new career best. 

Fellow freshmen Miranda Alig and Lita Chowning were 31st in 23:41.4 and 51st in 25:38.6, respectively. Ella Roessner ran to a time of 28:05.1 for 63rd, and Elizabeth McDowell was 67th in 30:25.8.

In the boys race, Skyler Myers was the top Patriot boy as he finished 16th in 18:11.2. Alex LeMaster crossed 31st in 18:37.1. 

Mitchell Winner (19:21.9) was 52nd, Tayler Smeltzer (19:21.9) placed 53rd and Mason Winner (21:08.5) finished 71st.

Catherine Stafford also ran for the JCHS girls, and she was 71st in 31:43.5. For the boys were Matthew Minnich (72nd – 21:17.5) and Candler Hedges (73rd – 21:18).



Tribe trounces Jets

ARCANUM, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s volleyball team pushed its record to 8-1 on the season Monday with a sweep of the host Franklin Monroe Jets.

The Division IV No. 6 Indians (7-1) won 25-15, 25-12, 25-16.

Carley Stone had a team-best 13 kills to go with her seven digs. Paige Jutte was second on the team with 10 kills, and Cassy Martin totaled eight kills.

Brooke Gaerke and Martin led the team in blocks with four and three respectively, while Kiah Wendel and Alexis Bubp had nine digs each. 

Hannah Knapke tallied four aces, as Madi Rammel totaled 22 assists.

Val Muhlenkamp had eight kills in leading the FRHS junior varsity team 25-15, 25-13.

Harlie Dues notched three kills and two blocks, and Rachel Acheson tallied 19 assists.



FR still winless

MINSTER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys golf team remained winless in conference play Monday with a 173-203 loss to the Minster Wildcats at Arrowhead Golf Club.

The Indians fell to 0-7 in Midwest Athletic Conference contests.

Harrison Kaup had one birdie and four pars in leading the Indians with a 43. Grant Knapke was second on the team with 48, and Dylan Ranly had a birdie on his way to a 54. Carson Rammel totaled 58 to complete the Tribe’s team score.

Blayne Tobe (62) and Seth Lochtefeld (63) also competed but did not factor into the team total.

Minster’s Ethan Lehmkuhl was match medalist with 3-over par 39.



Patriot JV wins

MONROE — Jay County’s junior varsity football team improved to 2-2 on the season Monday with a 36-28 victory over the host Adams Central Flying Jets.

The Patriots led 14-7 at halftime, and were one point better than the Jets in the final two periods.

Braden McIntire led the JCHS ground attack with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Bailey Cox also added a rushing score.

Landon Grimes completed 10 of his 14 pass attempts for 120 yards and two TDs. He completed touchdown passes to Elijah Corwin and Sheldon Eley.

Corwin hauled in seven catches for 70 yards, and Eley had two catches for 50 yards.

Corwin paced the defense too, totaling seven tackles and recovering a fumble.



Indians beat ’Dogs

CELINA — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams on Monday both defeated the Celina Bulldogs.

The eighth grade Indians won 25-12, 25-17, and the seventh graders rebounded from a first-set loss to win 19-25, 25-15, 26-24.

Marissa Gaerke and Whitley Rammel led the eighth graders with nine and seven kills respectively. Grace Guggenbiller was tops on the team with nine digs, and Madelyn Knapke had 11 assists.

Brookelyn Jutte’s three kills were a team-best for FRMS seventh graders. Abby Knapke had seven digs, Audra Bubp tallied four aces and Faith

Wendel contributed 11 assists.

Both teams move to 6-1 on the year.
