BERNE — It was a hazardous day to be connected to the South Adams and Fort Recovery high school volleyball teams.
By the end, the Indians were the last ones standing.
Rallying from a two-sets-to-none deficit, Fort Recovery dominated the final three sets as it kept its non-conference winning streak intact with a 20-25, 21-25, 25-12, 25-12, 15-8 victory over the host Starfires.
“We needed a good, competitive team to play against,” said FRHS coach Chelsea Kahlig, whose team’s only loss this season came against Midwest Athletic Conference rival St. Henry. “We didn’t want to be in that situation (down two sets to none) but it was good for us because we have a big one — we’re playing the No. 1 team in the state on Thursday.”
It was a tough day and night for South Adams, which was without coach Ashley Buckingham after her eldest daughter suffered a broken arm on the playground earlier in the day. Then, midway through the second set, senior Addie Wanner was forced to depart with an apparent broken nose.
“I’m very proud of the girls though. We were 13-15 and Kylie Bixler had to come in … and we finished out that game. We beat them,” said assistant coach Paul Yoder, who took over in the absence of Buckingham. “That was a big-time team coming together and making it happen even with one of our big players out. I can’t give enough credit for that. That was awesome.
“Maybe too big of a break between games there. … We got to relax too much between the second and the third game. … We just didn’t come out and play as hard that third game.”
The Indians (8-1), who lost middle hitter Brooke Gaerke (eight blocks) to an apparent concussion during the fourth set, lost by tight margins in the first two sets before finding their groove in the third. They took big leads and never let up in cruising to 25-12 victories in the third and fourth sets, and then exploded out of the gate for an 8-2 lead in the fifth and deciding game as Yoder was forced to spend both of his timeouts in the opening 10 points.
Madi Wurster managed a couple of kills to get the Starfires (13-5) to within 9-4, but that was as close as it would be.
Fort Recovery ripped off the next four consecutive points, including a pair of kills from Carley Stone. After a brief SAHS three-point run sparked by a block and kill from Wurster, Stone recorded a block against Shaelynn Bowman for a 14-7 Tribe lead. Two points later, Paige Jutte notched her 15th and final kill of the evening to end the match.
“I just think in the game of volleyball if you gain the momentum you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Kahlig, whose team had everything going in its favor in the final three sets. “We took control. The pace of the game sped up for us and they couldn’t handle it as much.”
The Indians had a trio of attackers in double figures, with Stone (17 kills) and Cassy Martin (10 kills) joining Jutte. They delivered on the bulk of Madi Rammel’s 45 assists as Fort Recovery switched to a 5-1 with Rammel at setter to allow libero Kiah Wendel (16 digs) to play in every rotation.
“We hadn’t done that yet this year,” said Kahlig, who also got 19 digs from Rammel. “Just having that extra defensive specialist back there got it to our setter and our hitters were able to take advantage of it.”
Though Wanner had just two kills and two digs when she left the court with her injury, her absence changed everything for South Adams. It allowed the Indians to focus even more heavily on Wurster — she still racked up a match-high 26 kills — in an effort to make the rest of the team beat them.
“They really seemed to exploit the missing of Addie … and we really struggled getting a block up and getting touches,” said Yoder.

Fort Recovery knocked off the Starfires 25-19, 25-14.
South Adams got seven digs, six kills and two aces from Gabi Bailey in the defeat. Josie Grabau had 11 assists, and Jade Baker and Sidney Schwartz had seven digs apiece.
Val Muhlenkamp had four kills, three digs and an assist for the Indians. Harlie Dues totaled three kills, one solo block and two block assists. Brooke Kahlig recorded eight digs and two kills while Rachel Achson had 12 assists.
