BLUFFTON — Kaiti Gorrell gets to play one more week.

Gorrell, a South Adams High School senior, shot 88 during the IHSAA girls golf sectional tournament Saturday at Timber Ridge Golf Course to earn a spot in regional.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advance to regional.

Homestead won the team title with 313, ahead of Bellmont (370) and Heritage (374). South Adams finished sixth with 399.

Gorrell, who was the Allen County Athletic Conference champion Sept. 9, made par twice on both the front and back nine holes as she had identical totals of 44.

She was 10 strokes better than teammate Becah Schwartz. Shayla Welch was third on the team with 106. Allyson Schwartz completed the team score with 107.

Claire Sutton finished with 115 but did not factor into the team score.

Madelin Pape (76) of Bishop Luers and Maria Teel (85) earned the other two qualifying spots to regional, which is Saturday at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville.

Jay boys 11th

YORKTOWN — Jay County’s boys cross country team finished 11th on Saturday in the Yorktown Invitational.

Lawrence North won the team title with 44 points. Hagerstown was second wth 97 points, and Muncie Central totaled 125 to place third. Jay County had 262 points.

The Patriot girls did not qualify for a team score.

Junior Skyler Myers was the top JCHS boy, finishing 23rd in 17 minutes, 59 seconds. Senior Alex LeMaster crossed in 18:28 for 36th. Freshman Mitchell Winner placed 54th in 19:05, junior Tayler Smeltzer was 62nd in 19:24 and freshman Mason Winner wa s 87th in 21:27.

JCHS freshman Sophia Fugiett placed eighth overall in 21:01. Miranda Alig was 26th in 23:19, Lita Chowning finished 53rd 25:20 and Elizabeth McDowell was 78th in 30:32.

Candler Hedges (89th) and Matthew Minnich (93rd) also competed for the Patriots.



Late goal lifts Jay

CENTERVILLE — The Jay County boys soccer team scored a second-half goal Saturday in a 1-0 victory over the Centerville Bulldogs.

After the Patriots (3-4-3) and Bulldogs played to a scoreless tie in the first half, Daniel Fugiett broke the shutout with a second-half tally. Ian McCombs assisted on the play.

Jay County travels to St. Marys, Ohio, on Tuesday to take on the Memorial Roughriders in a game that was rescheduled from Aug. 28.



East Jay girls win

SELMA — The East Jay Middle School girls cross country team had four finish in the top 15 on Friday as the Chiefs won the Selma Invitational.

East Jay totaled 70 points to win the 15-team invite. Delta scored 87 for second and Monroe Central was third with 110.

The East Jay eighth grade boys team was fifth with 130. Delta (32) won, Monroe Central (33) was second and Selma (101) was third.

The sixth and seventh grade boys won with 21 points, ahead of Selma (66) and Daleville (117).

Lydia Keihn was second overall to lead the EJMS girls. Mara Bader was 10th while Lindy Wood and Rachel Heitkamp were 13th and 14th respectively. Olivia Waters completed the team score by placing 31st.

Dustin Harris led the East Jay boys by finishing 12th. Nico Minnich and Seth Wilson were back-to-back in 27th and 28th. Sebastian Jones was 34th and Sheldon Minnich was 39th.

Cameron Clark and Tony Wood were second and third to pace the Chief sixth and seventh grade team. Tyler Manor was fifth, Thomas LeMaster placed seventh and Sebastian Solid finished ninth.



Chiefs struggle

SELMA — The East Jay volleyball teams all finished with losing records Saturday in the Selma Invitational.

The eighth grade team defeated Southwood (25-22, 16-25, 15-13) before losing to Union County (25-21, 24-25, 15-8), Selma (25-20, 25-23) and Alexandria (25-19, 20-25, 15-12).

Madison Dirksen totaled 21 kills on the day while also adding a dozen digs, and Madison Jetmore had a dozen kills. Grace Brewster totaled 37 digs as Maddy Wenk notched team-highs in both service points (27) and assists (24).

East Jay’s seventh graders lost to Southwood (25-15, 25-14), Union County (25-15, 25-11), Selma (25-5, 25-3) and Daleville (25-23, 25-11).

Laci McGinnis had six kills and four aces. Madison Brunswick totaled two kills, four digs and five aces. Lauren Brewster notched 10 digs.

The EJMS sixth grade squad lost to Northside (25-15, 25-14) and beat Daleville (25-12, 25-21) before losses to Yorktown (25-15, 25-6) and Wes-Del (23-25, 25-11, 15-9).

Bralee VanSkyock notched six kills and seven aces. Riah Champ recorded 39 service points, including 28 aces.
