Quality opponents can bring out the best effort in athletes.
Ava Kunkler proved that Wednesday.
Kunker, a 2016 Jay County High School graduate, set a new career high in kills for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team in a 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 loss to NAIA No. 25 Marian University.
Kunkler, a sophomore outside hitter, shared the match-high of 15 kills to lead the Cougars (2-13, 2-4 Crossroads League). She also had the set-clinching kill in the opener before USF dropped three straight to the Knights. Kunkler also had three digs and assisted on a block.
The former Patriot notched 10 kills, three blocks and two digs on Sept. 14 during a 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19 road loss to the Taylor Trojans.
Cassidy Rammel
Fort Recovery – 2015
Also played for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team in a pair of losses recently.
The junior had a match-high 17 kills in a 3-1 loss to Taylor on Sept. 14. She also had seven digs, three aces and a block.
In the 3-1 loss to NAIA No. 25 Marian on Wednesday, she was second on the team with 14 kills while also adding eight digs and a block.
Kendra Siefring

Led the way defensively in blocks for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team in a pair of defeats.
The sophomore notched a team-best four blocks while also contributing five kills, one dig and an assist in a 3-1 loss to NAIA No. 25 Marian on Wednesday.
The former Indian also shared the team-high of four blocks in a 3-1 loss to Taylor on Sept. 14. Siefring added five kills and five digs in the defeat.
Eric Hemmelgarn
Jay County – 2014
Had a season-high tackle total for the University of Saint Francis football team in a 49-21 victory on Saturday over St. Ambrose University.
Hemmelgarn, a redshirt senior, had four tackles, including one for a loss, for the defending NAIA national champion and top-ranked Cougars (3-0).
He assisted on consecutive stops on a St. Ambrose drive in the second quarter, and had a solo tackle later in the half. On the first drive of the third quarter, Hemmelgarn tackled running back Justice O’Conner for a 4-yard loss.
Derek Wanner
South Adams – 2015
Contributed to the Taylor University football team on Saturday in a 27-21 loss to the Butler Bulldogs.
The junior defensive back broke up one pass attempt for the Trojans (1-1).
Wanner has started both games for Taylor, recording one tackle and one pass break up.
Aleesha Goodwin
South Adams – 2015
Helped the Indiana Tech women’s cross country team finish fifth on Saturday in the Cedarville Friendship Cross Country Invitational.
Goodwin was 81st overall in the 5K race her time of 22 minutes, 55.3 seconds. She was the No. 6 runner for the Warriors, who totaled 168 points. Wright State won with 34 points.
Elle Sutter
Fort Recovery – 2014
Ran for the Ohio Northern women’s cross country team on Saturday in the Tiffelberg Open hosted by Heidelberg University.
She was 52nd overall in the 6K race with a time of 26 minutes, 33.5 seconds.
Sutter was 14th on the team as the Polar Bears won with a team score of 59, seven points ahead of Mount Union.

Also competed in the Tiffelberg Open on Saturday for the Ohio Northern men’s cross country team.
Sutter was 47th in the 8K race with his time of 28 minutes, 9.3 seconds. He was ninth on the team. The Polar Bears totaled 90 points for fifth. John Carroll won with 57 points.

Helped the Wright State University volleyball team win the Chicago State Invitational championship on Saturday.
The freshman had six kills and two digs as the Raiders (6-7) defeated host Chicago State 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 to win their first invitational of the season.
Barcus had six kills, one assist and a dig in Wright State’s tournament-opening win over Southeast Missouri on Friday, then followed with seven kills, one assist, one dig and a solo block in a sweep of Louisana-Lafayette.
Kirsten Jutte
Fort Recovery – 2016
Played for the Capital University volleyball team as it finished 3-1 in the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic hosted by College of Wooster.
She had five kills, one dig and helped on one block on Friday in a 3-1 loss to the tournament host.
She added a pair of aces in a 3-0 win on Saturday over Frostburg, then chipped in a 3-0 win over Franciscan with three kills and a block assist.
The Crusaders move to 7-6 on the season.
Kylie Osborne
Jay County – 2015
Posted a team-high kill total for the Anderson University volleyball team on Friday in a 3-0 loss to Hiram College during the Kalamazoo College Invitational.
She totaled 11 kills as the only Raven player to reach double digits. She also had 15 digs, which was second on the team.
Osborne also notched three kills, three digs and an ace in a 3-1 loss for the Ravens (4-9) earlier in the tournament to the host team.
Kyra Braun

Pushed her doubles unbeaten streak to four matches for the Trine University women’s tennis team in an 8-1 loss Sept. 14 to Bethel College.
Braun and her partner Katie Simon defeated Grace Haley and Stephanie Cressman 9-8 (7-5) at No. 3 singles.
The sophomore dropped her No. 5 singles match to Chase Keiper 7-5, 6-2.
