WINCHESTER — The Starfires were anxious to finally begin the season.

The top batters in the lineup carried them to a victory to start the year.

The first through fourth batters combined to go 12-for-15 and accounted for 10 RBIs in lifting the South Adams High School softball team to a 12-2 victory in five innings Thursday over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

South Adams (1-0) led 2-1 after the first inning before scoring five runs in each of the next two frames for a 12-1 advantage. Winchester pushed across a run in the fifth inning but wasn’t able to add another to prevent a run-rule defeat.

Isabella Ramirez led the SAHS offense as she was 3-for-4 and blasted a triple and a double while driving in four runs. Tori Raugh had a double, two singles and three RBIs, and Kayla LeFever notched three singles and two RBIs. Lexi Dellinger also tallied three hits, and Anna Nussbaum contributed a pair of singles with two RBIs.

Nussbaum threw three innings to get the win. She allowed one unearned run, struck out three and walked three.



Stars blank Falcons

BERNE — Three pitchers combined to surrender just one hit as the South Adams baseball team picked up a 2-0 victory over the Winchester Golden Falcons on Thursday.

South Adams (2-0), which is ranked third in Class 2A by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association, did all of its damage with two outs in the third inning. Grant Besser walked before Nic Stuber singled on a bunt. Joe Stuber loaded the bases with a bunt of his own, and the Starfires pushed across two runs on an error from Golden Falcon shortstop Kaden White.

The bunts by the Stuber brothers were the only two hits for South Adams.

Mark Clary got the start on the bump for South Adams, and he threw four hitless innings while striking out nine and walking one. Winchester got a hit off of reliever Isaiah Baumgartner, who also fanned four batters with a walk, and Auston Davidson pitched to record the final out of the game.



SA track splits

WINCHESTER — The South Adams track teams split a meet with the Winchester Golden Falcons on Thursday.

The Starfire girls won all but one event in a 93-30 victory, while the boys lost 71-52.

Addie Wanner won all four of her events, as she was first in the 100-meter hurdles (17.1 seconds), 300 hurdles (56.7 seconds), high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) and long jump (15 feet, 5.5 inches).

Olivia Von Gunten added three individual victories, claiming the top spot in the 100 dash (13.8), 400 dash (1 minute, 7 seconds) and 200 dash (28.8 seconds).

Kallee Patch won both the 800 and 1,600 runs, Eliza Harruff was first in the 3,200 run, Taylor Augsburger won shot put and Calyssa Lehman got first place in discus.

Lars In’t Groen was a triple winner, claiming victories in shot put, discus and high jump. Victor Vasquez (1,600 run) and Brett Schwartz (400 dash) were also first.



Tennis wins

BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team earned a 4-1 victory Thursday against the Winchester Golden Falcons.

Julia Grabau and Hannah Dull both won their singles matches. At No. 2 singles, Grabau defeated Brianna Boughe 6-1, 6-0, and Dull knocked off Kate Hendrickson at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-2.

The SAHS No. 1 doubles team of Breanna Potts and Katrina Fosnaugh beat Riley Helms and Manci Franz 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and at No. 2 doubles, Jade Farlow and Cassie Yoder lost the first set 6-3 to Stacy Cox and Lindsey Schroeder before taking the final two, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0).



Jay drops opener

MUNCIE — Jay County’s softball team opened its season Thursday with a 12-1 loss to the host Delta Eagles in five innings.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Patriots (0-1) tied the score with a run in the top of the second. But the Eagles scored four runs in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth to get the run-rule victory.

Hannah Phillips had a hit and drove in the only run for Jay County. Sam Twigg and Emily Corn both notched doubles, and Randi Ferguson had a single.
