SELMA — The Patriots had the offense, but a early inning from the home team was too much to overcome against the top-ranked team in the state.

The Jay County High School baseball team gave up five runs in the second inning and had its rally fall short Thursday in a 9-7 loss to Class 2A No. 1 Wapahani.

After falling behind 2-1 heading into the home half of the inning, Wapahani, which was state runner-up last season, put up five runs to lead 6-2. Jay County (2-2) scored five times in the final three innings but came up short.

Cole Stigleman led Jay County with three hits, including two doubles. Wyatt Geesaman, who drove in a pair of runs, and Payton Heniser also had a pair of doubles. Max Moser had his 21-game hitting streak come to an end, but he did have two RBIs and drew a walk as he has now reached base safely in 25 consecutive games.

Sophomore Noah Arbuckle shouldered the loss, as he allowed six runs — all unearned — on four hits in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked five.

Jay girls first

MUNCIE — The Jay County girls track team moved to 4-0 on the season as it finished first in a three-team meet Thursday with sectional rival Yorktown Tigers and host Delta Eagles.

The Patriots scored 67 points, ahead of the Tigers (46) and Delta (43).

Sophia Fugiett, Kinsey Shannon, Kendal Garringer and Taylor Muhlenkamp each had individual victories. Fugiett had a time of 5 minutes, 53 seconds, to win the 1,600-meter run, while Shannon was first in the 200 dash in 27.1 seconds.

Garringer won high jump with a height of 4 feet, 10 inches, and Muhlenkamp had a distance of 91 feet, 7 inches, to take first in discus.

The Patriots’ 4x400 relay team of Grace Saxman, Kendra Muhlenkamp, Renee Omstead and Ashlyn Dow won in 4:24.

Boys results were not available.

Streak snapped

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery baseball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped Thursday with a 5-1 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals.

Grant Selby hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first inning to give the Cardinals the only runs they needed.

The Cardinals led 3-0 by the time the Indians (8-2, 2-1 MAC) scored a run. Nick Thwaits got hit by a pitch to begin the frame and stole second. He then scored on a Reese Rogers single.

Cade Wendel, Will Homan and Ben Homan each had singles in the contest.

New Bremen added to its lead with two runs in the fifth inning.

Wendel took the loss, allowing three runs — two earned — on three hits in four innings. He struck out seven and walked three.

Cards top Tribe

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team suffered its first conference loss Thursday with a 9-2 defeat to the New Bremen Cardinals.

Six hits and a pair of errors helped New Bremen stake a seven-run lead after the first inning.

The Cardinals tacked on one run in each of the next two innings before Fort Recovery (4-3, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored its only two runs in the fourth inning.

Hannah Knapke led FRHS with a double and a single, as Olivia Homan and Bailee Tebbe also had doubles.

Taylor Thien and Brenna Homan contributed singles, while Olivia Homan and Thien each had RBIs.
