Jay County High School’s baseball team scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday as it beat the Woodlan Warriors 3-2 in the Allen County Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Woodlan (3-1, 0-1 ACAC) scored twice in the top of the first inning and kept Jay County (3-2, 1-0 ACAC) at bay for the first four innings.
The Patriots cut the deficit in half during the fifth inning on a Mitchel Frasher RBI single. One inning later, Max Moser drove in Cole Stigleman to tie the game and Wyatt Geesaman scored on a throwing error by Woodlan pitcher Blake Bontrager for the game-winning run.
Geesaman threw seven strong innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking four. He also had two doubles and a single to lead the Patriots.
Moser has now reached base safely in 26 straight games.
Patriots split
Jay County’s junior varsity softball team opened its season by splitting a pair of games.
On April 12, Jay County hosted the Union Rockets and won 29-5. Thursday against Woodlan in Woodburn, the Patriots lost 22-10.
Justice Day had a pair of doubles, a single, two walks and scored all five times she reached base against Union.
Rieley Brewster added a grand slam and scored four times.
Jay County totaled 10 hits and drew 20 walks in the game.
Against Woodlan on Thursday, Brewster hit her second home run of the year, and added a double while driving in four runs.
Breanna Randall added three runs, as Abbi Kuss was 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
Haley Gillette got the win pitching against Union, while Lexie Ferguson suffered the loss to Woodlan.
Warriors top Jay
WOODBURN — Seven errors and an early deficit was too much to overcome for the Jay County junior varsity baseball team Thursday in a 15-10 loss to the host Woodlan Warriors.
The home team built a 10-0 lead after two innings, but Jay County responded with nine straight runs, including six in the third inning.
The Warriors pushed the advantage to 15-9 after six innings before the Patriots got one back in the top of the seventh.

The Jay County middle school golf team lost its season opener Thursday, 120-169, in a six-hole match against Delta at Portland Golf Club.
Kyle Sanders posted the best score for Jay County as he finished with 35. Seth Wilson shot 42 for second, one stroke ahead of Bretton Basford. Isaac Braun completed the team score with 49.
Aidan Garlinger also competed and he finished with 45.
Lane Chapman and Reid Claycomb both had singles.
