CELINA, Ohio — The Starfires fell behind in the second inning.

They did all the scoring they needed in the third to keep their winning streak going.

The South Adams High School baseball team scored four runs in the third inning to beat the Celina Bulldogs 4-2 Thursday at Montgomery Field.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Starfires (11-1), who went a perfect 4-0 against teams from across the state line.

Grant Besser and Nic Stuber had RBI doubles to start the scoring in the fourth inning, and Stuber later scored on a Collin Shaffer bunt single. Clary hit a sacrifice fly to score Shaffer to push the Starfire lead to 4-1.

Celina (3-12) trimmed the deficit to the eventual final score with a run in the fifth inning.

Joe Stuber, Terry Dawn and Keagan Yoder each collected singles for South Adams.

Adam Besser, a freshman, started on the hill for the first time in his career. He allowed one unearned run on five hits in four innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Austin Davidson gave up one earned run on one hit in three innings of relief.



Jets top Stars

MONROE — The South Adams girls tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to Allen County Athletic Conference rival Adams Central on Thursday.

Julia Grabau earned the only victory for the Starfires (5-2, 0-1 ACAC). She defeated Lily Kintz 6-4, 6-4 in their No. 2 singles tilt.

At No. 1 singles, Haley Gerber fell to Maddy DeRoo 7-5, 2-6, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Hannah Dull lost to Saige Rinkenberger 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

The No. 1 doubles team of Breanna Potts and Jade Farlow lost 6-4, 6-2 to Sarah Liter and Kyndall Roe, while Katrina Fosnaugh and Cassie Yoder dropped a 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 match to Rendi Degitz and Laurel Tijeina at No. 2 doubles.

South Adams’ junior varsity team won, 7-3.



SA golf third

DECATUR — South Adams’ boys golf team finished third Thursday in a three-team event with Bellmont and Adams Central at Cross Creek Golf Club.

Bellmont won with a 163 team score. Adams Central totaled 193 for second and South Adams totaled 230.

David Muselman paced the Starfires by shooting a team-best 44. Blaine Harruff was second on the team with 61, one stroke ahead of Spencer Fear. Korbin Dunnuck carded a 63 to complete the team scoring.

Brayden Gilbert (64) and Braden Bixler (66) also competed, but they did not factor into the team score.



Miller lifts Stars

BERNE — Nick Miller hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday, lifting the South Adams junior varsity baseball team to a 5-4 win over the Concordia Cadets.

South Adams tied the game at two in the bottom of the second inning, and had its 3-2 lead slip away in the top of the fifth. Concordia took a one-run lead in the top of the seventh before Miller’s heroics.

Tim Davidson led the Starfires with four singles, and James Arnold chipped in a double, a single, a walk and an RBI. Luke Yoder contributed two singles as Alex Gorney also had a base hit.

Yoder got the win in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts in one inning of work.
