DAYTON, Ohio — Almost half of the Patriots placed in the top three.
The team narrowly missed doing the same.
Jay County High School’s wrestling team was fourth on Saturday in the Franklin Invitational.
Cincinnati LaSalle, which was fourth in the state in Division I last season, won with 402 points. Western Brown (205) and Ross (180.5) were second and third respectively, and Jay County totaled 174 points for fourth out of 10 teams.
Junior Mason Winner had the best finish out of any Patriot as he was the runner-up at 182 pounds.
Dylan Garringer (106), Zakk Atkins (120), Jordan Schricker (145), Thomas Hemmelgarn (160) and Lucas Schmit (220) were all third.
Placing fourth were Blayne Daniels (126) and Tyler Moore (170). Dylan Racster (113) and Cooper Jacks (285) both finished fifth while Garrett Mann (152) and Nathaniel Lykins (195) placed eighth.
FR boys win
FORT RECOVERY — The Indians won big in their opener.
The Fort Recovery boys basketball team opened its season Saturday by drubbing the Delphos Jefferson Wildcats, 67-24, at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
The Indians (1-0) led 16-4 after the first quarter before pushing the advantage to 36-10 at half. Fort Recovery was out front 44-22 with one quarter to play before limiting the Wildcats to just two points in the final eight minutes.
Payton Jutte finished with a game-high 25 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Grant Knapke joined him in double figures with 13 points, and Clay Schmitz totaled eight points. Gavin Thobe had five points in his varsity debut, and Blayne Tobe also had five points.
Derek Jutte and Noah Lennartz scored four points each, and Ryne Post had three points.
Tribe rallies
WAPAKONETA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls basketball team needed a second-half rally to beat Wapakoneta 37-34 on Saturday.
After trailing 11-6 heading to the second quarter and 14-13 at half, the Indians (1-1) pulled ahead 23-22 with one quarter and held off the Redskins in the final eight minutes.
Olivia Patch led the Indians with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting and a 4-of-6 effort from the free-throw line. Brooke Kahlig contributed eight points, and Paige Fortkamp chipped in five points. Val Muhlenkamp and Brenna Homan finished with four points each, as Hope Wendel and Alli Vaughn scored two points apiece.
Kahlig and Muhlenkamp both had six rebounds, and Muhlenkamp chipped in three assists.
Stars fall below .500
MONROEVILLE — A sluggish third quarter doomed the South Adams girls basketball team as it dipped below .500 with a 47-31 loss to the host Heritage Patriots on Saturday.
The Starfires (3-4, 0-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) trailed 8-7 after one quarter and 22-17 at halftime before the Patriots (8-2, 1-0 ACAC) had a 17-6 margin in the third quarter.
Emilee Myers scored nine points for South Adams, and Carlie Sealscott was second with eight points. Madi Smith and Lydia Loshe finished with six and five points respectively, and Kristen Wynn had three points.
Heritage also won the junior varsity matchup, 34-31.
Makayla Hamrick led South Adams with nine points, and Sealscott again scored eight points. Macie Hirschy and Ali Smith both tallied six points and Haley Armstrong contributed two points.
