OSSIAN — A few upperclassmen and a freshman got the only win for the Patriots.

Jay County High School’s 200-yard freestyle team finished first on Saturday as the Patriot boys were fourth as a squad at the Norwell Invitational.

The host Knights scored 316 to win their own invitational. Bluffton was second with 274 and Oak Hill scored 240 for third. The Patriots had 141 points for fourth out of nine scoring teams.

South Adams scored 70 points for sixth.

Tayler Smeltzer (senior), Chase McFarland (junior), Dorane Beiswanger (freshman) and Skyler Myers (senior) of JCHS combined to win the 200 freestyle relay with their time of 1 minute, 39.4 seconds, a mere one tenth of a second ahead of Bluffton.

Tribe struggles

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery girls basketball team struggled to get its offense going early in a 57-36 setback to the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans on Saturday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.

The Indians (1-3) fell behind 19-6 after the first quarter and were behind 36-14 at half. Ottawa-Glandorf, which has reached the state semifinal each of the last four years and was the runner-up in both 2015 and 2016, led 43-26 with one quarter to play before keeping the game out of reach in the final eight minutes.

Olivia Patch and Alli Vaughn led the Indians with eight points apiece, and Val Muhlenkamp contributed six points before fouling out. She also grabbed seven rebounds.

Kierra Wendel also had six points.

SA comes up short

BERNE — A fourth-quarter rally came up short on Saturday as the South Adams boys basketball team lost to the North Side Legends, 62-54 at Stardome.

The Starfires (0-4) trailed by three after one quarter and went into intermission facing a five-point deficit, 27-22. The Legends (1-4), who snapped a five-game losing streak dating back to last season’s regional final, outscored South Adams 22-12 in the third quarter for a 49-34 lead.

South Adams had clawed back in the fourth quarter to outscore the Legends 20-13 but came up short.

Nick Miller had a career night for the Starfires as he was 11-for-18 from the field on his way to 25 points. He also grabbed 17 rebounds to post career highs. Aidan Wanner and Brayden Gilbert joined him in double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Trey Shoals led the Legends with 16 points.
