BERNE — The Patriots got off to a hot start Saturday afternoon.

The Starfires weren’t able to keep up.

Jay County High School’s girls basketball team scored 27 points in the first quarter and continued to bury the South Adams Starfires for a 66-36 victory at Stardome.

It was the 12th consecutive win for Jay County (6-6, 4-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) against ACAC rivals during the regular season. 

The Patriots led the Starfires (5-6, 1-3 ACAC) 27-14 after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 42-21 at half. Jay County, which is the four-time defending regular season conference champion, continued to pull away in the final two quarters as it outscored South Adams 34-15 in the final 16 minutes.

Shelby Caldwell of Jay County led all players with 19 points, as Hannah Phillips (14) and Madison Dirksen (10) also scored in double figures. Phillips and Caldwell also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Shaelynn Bowman was the lone Starfire to reach double figures as she finished with 12 points. Emilee Myers and Lydia Loshe chipped in eight points apiece.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 41-29.

Pacie Denney and Aubrie Schwieterman scored 17 and 13 points respectively for Jay County. Macie Hirschy scored 17 points for the Starfires.



Tribe girls second

MINSTER, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls swim team tied for second Saturday at the New Bremen Tri meet at Mercer/Auglaize YMCA South Branch.

The host Cardinals won with 127 points, while Fort Recovery and Versailles both scored 73 points for second. Minster had 35 points for fourth.

Versailles won the boys meet with 118 points. Minster was runner-up with 80 points, New Bremen totaled 43 points for third and FRHS?was fourth with 24 points.

Cassy Martin and Ava Bubp both had two individual wins for the Tribe girls. Martin won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.41 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 5.66 seconds. Bubp touched the wall in 2:07.4 and 5:57.18 to win the 200 and 500 freestyle races respectively.

Shelby Stammen, Rachel Acheson, Bubp and Martin combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:11.9.



 
Dollar wins
 
MISHAWAKA — Lizzie Dollar led a contingent of four Jay County girls who competed in the Penn Girls Open wrestling tournament at Penn on Saturday.
 
Dollar, a freshman, won her respective weight class. Sophomore Lita Chowning and junior Nevaeh Cox were both runners-up, and freshman Maddy Rinker placed third.



 
Pair end perfect
 
FORT WAYNE — Two individuals went undefeated for the Jay County wrestling team as it was 3-2 during the Carroll Super Duals on Saturday.
 
Jay County (10-4) defeated Elkhart Central (51-25), Northrop (66-9) and Northwood (53-21) and suffered defeats to Garrett (43-42) in a tiebreaker and to host Carroll (60-14).
 
Blayne Daniels and Dawson Frasher each went 5-0 for the tournament. Dylan Racster was 4-1.
 
All four of his victories were pins in a combined 2 minutes, 25 seconds. Jordan Schricker, Thomas Hemmelgarn and Mason Winner also went 4-1 on the day, while Nathanael Lykins was 3-1. Camron Gage (3-2) and Jayden Maymi (1-0) also finished with winning records.



 
Stars fall to Panthers
 
BERNE — The South Adams Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both came up short against the Parkway Panthers.
 
The seventh graders fell 36-24, and the eighth graders lost 21-13.
 
Isaac Dee scored 12 points to lead the SAMS seventh graders (2-4). Owen Wanner finished with six points and Conner Fear contributed three points.
 
Brock Banter’s seven points led the eighth grade Starfires (3-4). Matt Steiner tallied three points.
