COLDWATER, Ohio — The Tribe executed its game plan in the first half.
Players were getting open, shots were falling and they were making things difficult at the other end for the Cavaliers.
They went into halftime with a seven-point lead. The same intensity was absent after intermission.
The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team got outscored 29-12 in the second half of a 40-30 loss Thursday to the Coldwater Cavaliers at The Palace.
“We got away from our game plan,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose Division IV No. 7 Indians dip to 14-4 (6-2 Midwest Athletic Conference). “First half we came out and executed what we wanted. Second half (we) stopped running what we wanted. We started shooting and forcing shots. Too many turnovers (and) making bad decisions by not being under control.”
It was the 13th consecutive win for Coldwater, which improved to 16-6 on the season and 6-3 in MAC play.
Fort Recovery started the third quarter with an 18-11 advantage and clung to a 25-20 advantage with less than two minutes to play in the period.
But that’s when things started to go off the hinges for the Tribe, which missed back-to-back 3-pointers and committed a turnover on its last three possessions of the quarter.
Coldwater’s Kourtney Diller tied the score at 25 with a layup to start the fourth quarter and the Cavaliers began the period with eight consecutive points to lead 31-25.
At the other end, shots that were going in for Fort Recovery in the first half seemed to go everywhere but through the basket. The Indians missed two shots and got called for travelling on their first possession of the period, then had three straight trips end with missed 3-pointers.
“We tried to play way too fast,” Patch said. “They tried to speed us up. We just put our head down and went. We started playing individual basketball instead of team basketball which is what we did in the first half.
“Then all the sudden we got out of control (and) started doing our own thing. Because of that we just had a meltdown and collapse.”
Fort Recovery’s first point of the fourth quarter came on a Grace Thien free throw with 3:55 to play, ending the Cavs’ 11-0 run. But they responded with five straight points for a 36-26 lead —the biggest for either team — with 2:56 to play.
Maura Hoying of Coldwater scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the second half, including seven straight for the Cavs in the fourth quarter.
Thien had a pair of triples and finished with 11 points to lead the Indians. She also had a team-best eight rebounds.
Olivia Patch and Val Muhlenkamp each had six points.
Fort Recovery was 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from the field in the first half but finished just 13-of-42 (31 percent) in for the game. Coldwater, on the other hand, was 13.6 percent (3-of-22) in the opening half and 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) after intermission.
“Defensively we executed what we wanted,” Patch said. “They shot 13 percent and they didn’t get too many easy looks. … Our kids were playing hard. We were getting the looks we wanted (and) we were patient on offense.”
Fort Recovery led 11-7 after the first quarter before taking a seven-point lead into the break.
“All of our shots for the most part were good shots,” Patch added. “Shots we can hit. We were taking care of the basketball …
“Once a few things didn’t go our way, instead of the mental toughness we’ve been trying to work hard on it was just a free-for-all at that point.”

A strong first quarter carried over to the final three as Fort Recovery remained perfect in MAC play with a 36-24 victory.
The Indians (15-2, 8-0 MAC) led 15-2 after the first quarter and took a 23-13 advantage into halftime. The lead increased by one, 32-21, heading into the fourth quarter during which the Indians kept their edge in the low-scoring period.
Alli Vaughn scored 10 points to lead Fort Recovery, which also got nine points from Macey Day and six from Brenna Homan. Hope Wendel contributed four points.
