FORT RECOVERY — In a battle of two of the top teams in the state, the Indians were primed for the upset.
A Wildcat freshman dashed those hopes in the final seconds.
Minster’s Janae Hoying made a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to hand the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team a 38-35 loss Thursday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
It was a back-and-forth contest between the Division IV No. 8 Indians (16-5, 6-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) and the third-ranked Wildcats (19-3, 8-1 MAC). They were tied at 11 heading to the second quarter with Minster leading 20-16 at halftime. Fort Recovery rallied to tie the score at 27 with one period remaining, and the teams were tied late before Hoying’s heroics.
Fort Recovery’s Grace Thien had a game-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Val Muhlenkamp was second with eight points, as Carley Stone and Olivia Patch had six points each. Muhlenkamp added a team-best eight rebounds.
Alli Fisher led Minster with nine points, and Hoying finished with six points.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also lost, 36-21. Paige Fortkamp and Macy Day led the Tribe with eight points each. Brenna Homan and Brooke Kahlig had three points apiece.
Chief wrestlers win
There weren’t many contested matches for the Chiefs.
But even in the ones they had opponents, they were nearly unstoppable.
East Jay Middle School’s wrestling team moved to 8-3 on the season Thursday with an 81-12 victory over the Northside Titans.
Cameron Clark (95 pounds), Blayne Daniels (117), Kadin Ridenour (132), Cameron Gage (140) and Ramon Bravo (195) all won their respective matches by pinning their opponent.
At 152 pounds, Mason Ludy earned a 19-3 tech fall victory, and Nate Paxson won at 125 pounds by a 14-6 major decision.
Tony Wood, Cody Rowles, Carter Link, Dylan Garringer, Patrick Hemmelgarn, Jayden Maymi and Conner Specht all received forfeits.
