Sophie Timmerman and Alexis Bubp have been friends since they were 6 years old.
Throughout their friendship that has spanned more than a decade, they’ve spent a considerable amount of time together in the pool.
The Fort Recovery High School seniors will cap their high school swimming careers at the sport’s pinnacle, the OHSAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.
“We’ve had this goal since freshman year so for it to finally happen for us is really amazing,” said Bubp, who along with sister Ava, freshman Paige Fortkamp, junior Cassy Martin and Timmerman will compete in four events during the preliminaries that begin at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The top eight in each event earn a spot in the championship finals at 5 p.m. Friday. Places nine through 16 reach the consolation finals.
“It’s very exciting to finally make it to state since we’ve had some close cuts before,” Timmerman added. “We finally did it.”
Zach Colpaert, a South Adams senior, will cap his career in the IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals that begin Friday at Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI.
“Just relief,” Colpaert said Saturday after winning sectional titles and state berths in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. “I mean, all my life I’ve been trying to get to state but never really thought I would.”
The five from Fort Recovery are the first state qualifiers in program history.
Martin is the only Indian competing in an individual race as she broke her own school record in the 50 freestyle by finishing eighth in 24.52 seconds.
She’ll join Timmerman and the Bubp sisters in the 400 freestyle relay and team with freshman Paige Fortkamp, Alexis Bubp and Timmerman in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Reaching the state meet has been just out of reach the last couple years for the Tribe. Cori Stone, a 2016 FRHS graduate, was fifth at district as an individual but missed qualifying for state. And in the last two seasons the Indians have had relays stand on the district podium but was denied state berths — the top two finishers from each of the four districts earn automatic bids, with the rest of the 16 at-large spots based on next fastest times.
“They went into the season saying, ‘We’ve been so close for the last few years, this is really our shot,’” said FRHS coach Mindy Bubp, mother to Ava and Alexis. “They sat down and said ‘We want to work harder. We want to do more.’”
So Mindy picked the brains of other local swim coaches, mainly Matt Slavik at Jay County and Andy Lehman of South Adams — the Indians practice in Berne — in an effort to revamp the practice regimen.
“Been kind of a joint effort to get this group to where they are,” she said. “They have worked very hard.”
It’s a tactic the girls say has paid off, too.
“This is definitely the hardest season practice-wise, I’d say,” Timmerman said. “Lots of hours in the pool.”
Fort Recovery’s 400 freestyle relay, which set a school record in 3 minutes, 41.88 seconds, has the best seed at 14th. Hawken is the top seed at 3:30.37, Columbus School for Girls (3:37.04) is eighth and Dover (3:42.02) is 16th.
The 200 freestyle relay is 16th with a school record 1:41.12. Hawken (1:34.81) is again the top seed with Wyoming (1:39.88) sitting eighth. The Indians’ 200 medley relay is 24th at 1:53.28, another school record. Hawken (1:43.81), Archbishop Alter (1:48.77) and Columbus Academy (1:50.88) are seeded first, eighth and 16th respectively.
“We want to come back for Friday,” Timmerman said of the relay expectations. “We want to go to consolations and swim again, just so our senior year isn’t over.”
Martin is seeded just outside the consolation final in the 50 freestyle in 17th. Cora Dupre of Mariemont is the No. 1 seed in 22.79 seconds. Kaylee Nagel of Napoleon is eighth at 24.16, and Catherine Kight of St. Ursula is 16th in 24.48. The 18th and 19th seeds are a mere two-hundredths of a second behind Martin, so she will have to have another record swim to return Friday.
“We’re just going to look at what we can do to shave off a few tenths here and there,” Mindy Bubp said. “Go into the state meet and just enjoy it and see what happens.”
Colpaert will have his work cut out for him in Indianapolis. In the 50 freestyle, he is seeded 34th in 22.03 seconds. Carmel’s Drew Kibler’s time of 20.1 seconds is the top seed, and Hamilton Heights’ Jared Holder and Connersvile’s Zane Spurlock are tied for 16th at 21.27 seconds.
In the 100 freestyle, Colpaert is seeded last out of 36 swimmers in 49.16 seconds. Jack Franzman of Zionsville is seeded No. 1 in 45.29 seconds, while DJ Rogers of Hamilton Southeastern is No. 16 in 46.94.
In both races, the top 31 seeds all surpassed the state cut of 21.59 and 47.42 seconds respectively.
