MARION — Still without one of its starters, the Starfire struggles continue.
The South Adams High School boys basketball team ended the regular season Friday with its sixth straight loss in a 58-41 defeat to the host Eastbrook Panthers.
The Starfires (5-17), who were once again without senior forward Kody Fike and have lost 10 of their last 11 games, trailed the Panthers (10-11) by four after the first quarter and were down 21-6 at the half.
James Arnold made four of his 11 3-point attempts on his way to a team-high 21 points for South Adams. Arnold also shared the team-high of five rebounds.
Lars In’t Groen was second with eight points, and Spenser Clark contributed six points. Brandon Newman added five points.
Ryan Mansbarger led Eastbrook with 21 points.
South Adams, which hosts the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament, opens postseason play at 6 p.m. March 2. The Starfires play the winner of Tuesday’s contest between Bluffton and Adams Central.
Lykins finishes seventh
INDIANAPOLIS — George Lykins finished seventh in his weight class in the Freshman/Sophomore Wrestling State Finals on Saturday and Sunday at Southport High School.
Lykins, a sophomore at Jay County, defeated Zachary Ditmire of Culver Community with a third-period pin in their seventh-place match.
The Patriot semi-state qualifier received a bye in the opening round and pinned Cash Nelson of Franklin in 61 seconds. In the quarterfinal Lykins lost a 4-1 decision, before pinning Jason Stevens of Rossville in the consolation quarterfinal.
His second loss was to Garrett Sandefur of Mishawaka in the consolation semifinal.
To participate in the tournament, wrestlers must finish in the top eight of a regional tournament or qualify for the IHSAA semi-state or state finals. IHSAA state medalists are not permitted.
Three win titles
The host East Jay Middle School wrestling team had three individual champions as it finished second Saturday in the East Jay Invite.
South Adams won the six-team tournament with 262.5 points, and East Jay totaled 238 for second. Yorktown finished third with 227 points.
Tony Wood, a 75-pounder, Blayne Daniels (110) and Mason Ludy (150) each won their respective weight classes for the Chiefs.
Dyllan Garringer (90) and Kadin Ridenour (132) were runners-up while Cody Rowles (80), Cameron Clark (95), Cameron Gage (140) and Ramon Bravo (175) all finished third.
