HARTFORD CITY — Ten was the magic number for the Chiefs on Tuesday.

East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both picked up 10-point victories against the Blackford Bruins.

The eighth graders won 31-21, and the seventh grade squad earned a 36-26 victory.

Madison Dirksen led the eighth graders (8-5) with 10 points, and Jayden Claytor was second on the team with seven points. Heaven Hambrock chipped in five points, Maddy Wenk scored three points as Abby Elzey and Andrea Jutte both had two points.

Olivia Waters led the seventh graders (12-1) with 16 points, and Renna Schwieterman had 14 points in support. Lydia Keihn completed the scoring with six points.



Boys sweep Delta

East Jay’s boys basketball teams both had double-digit victories Tuesday against the Delta Eagles.

The seventh grade squad had a 39-26 win, as the eighth graders nabbed a 40-28 victory.

Bennett Weitzel poured in 23 points and Carter Link added 11 points for the EJMS seventh graders (9-4). Dawson Hundley and Dusty Pearson both tallied two points and Matthew Fields had a free throw.

Ethan Dirksen led the eighth graders (10-3) with 13 points, and Mickey Waters was second with eight points.

Gavin and Adam Muhlenkamp contributed six and five points respectively as Crosby Heniser and Shawn Fisher had three points apiece.

Eagles split

PONETO — The West Jay seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams split with the host Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday.

The eighth graders won 26-11, and the seventh graders lost 21-19.

Isabel Rodgers led the eighth graders with 17 points, while Kaelyn Denney and Lizzie Dollar chipped in six and three points respectively.

Grace Shimp had eight points to pace the seventh grade team in the defeat. Gabi Bailey followed with six points while Paige Mumbower had three points.



Duo leads WJ 8th

DUNKIRK — Quinn Faulkner and Trenton Alexander both reached double figures on Tuesday in leading West Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team to a 39-23 win over Southern Wells.

The West Jay seventh graders lost 49-19.

Faulkner led the Eagles with 19 points, and Alexander added a dozen points. Camdin Harrison was third with seven points and Nick Street chipped in a free throw.

Gabe Goodspeed led the seventh graders with six points, while Spencer Caldwell had four points to go with his 16 rebounds. 



Chiefs win opener

MUNCIE — East Jay’s sixth grade girls basketball team opened its season Tuesday by beating the Muncie South Side Panthers 39-35.

Sophie Saxman led the Chiefs (1-0) with 23 points, as Danielle May and Molly Muhlenkamp each had four points.

Bralee VanSkyock, Cash Hollowell, Hannah Laux and Breanna Dirksen each had two points.
