MUNCIE — The Patriots desperately needed a win.
Following consecutive losses in a four-day span, they traveled to take on a new sectional rival.
The Patriots prevented a losing streak.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team got back in the win column Thursday with a 67-36 drubbing of the host Delta Eagles.
The Patriots (13-8) were out front by six after the first quarter, and an 18-point effort before halftime gave them a 33-20 advantage at the break. Jay County’s defense held the Eagles (9-11) to just four points in the third quarter while pouring in 17 points in each of the final two quarters.
Shelby Caldwell led the Patriots with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Hanna Ault chipped in a dozen points for Jay County, which hosts Southern Wells on Saturday for a chance to clinch the Allen County Athletic Conference regular-season championship.
Jay County’s junior varsity team moved to 14-4 with a 40-15 victory. Grace Saxman and Kendal Garringer had nine points each as Clare Dirksen scored seven points
Gymnasts first
CAMBRIDGE CITY — Karlie Bullard was first in every event Thursday to lead the Jay County gymnastics team as it picked up wins against host Lincoln and Anderson Prep.
Jay County totaled 98 points, while Lincoln was second with 34.925 points. Anderson Prep was 27.2 points.
Bullard set a career-high on balance beam with a score of 8.75. She added an 8.8 on floor exercise, 7.85 on uneven bars and 8.6 on vault for an all-around total of 34.0
Freshman Kenzie Ring posted career best totals on both beam (8.5) and vault (8.45) as she was second on both. On floor, Randi Ferguson (8.1) and Kaitlyn Morningstar (7.85) were third and fourth respectively as they had career best totals. Morningstar also had a career best 7.8 on vault as she was sixth.
Paige Howell totaled 6.65 on bars for a career best and a fourth-place finish.
Stars sweep Bruins
BERNE — The South Adams boys and girls swim teams swept the Blackford Bruins on Thursday.
The Starfire girls won every event in a 109-46 victory, and the boys claimed a 116-59 triumph over the Bruins.
Hannah Neuenschwander, Ashley LeFever and Bella Bailey were all dual winners. Neuenschwander was first in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, LeFever won the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle and Bailey finished first in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Julia Grabau (diving), Olivia Von Gunten (500 freestyle) and Amara Mikesell (100 backstroke) won their respective events.
Brayden Collingsworth (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Kam Yoder (200 IM, 100 butterfly) and Zach Colpaert (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) all had two victories.
Tyler Yoder won diving and Trey Lehman was first in the 100 backstroke.
The boys and girls teams won all three relays.
