MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Grace Thien was on fire from the outside.

Her efforts helped the Indians bounce back from just their second loss of the season.

Thien had five 3-pointers Thursday in leading the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team to a 50-18 throttling of the host Marion Local Flyers.

The Division IV No. 7 Indians (12-2, 5-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter and were up 22-9 at halftime. The Tribe outscored the Flyers (4-12, 2-4 MAC) 16-7 in the third quarter before holding Marion Local to just two points in the final period.

Thien was 5-of-7 behind the arc as she finished with a game-high 15 points. Kiah Wendel made a trio of 3-pointers on her way to nine points, and Carley Stone chipped in eight points. Olivia Patch and Thien had five rebounds apiece to lead Fort Recovery. 

The Tribe’s junior varsity team moved to 9-0 with a 44-21 victory. Hope Wendel and Brooke Kahlig both had a dozen points for the Indians.



SA swimmers win

BERNE — The South Adams boys and girls swim teams both defeated the DeKalb Barons on Thursday.

The boys had a 103-63 victory as the girls earned a 100-74 win.

Kam Yoder and Zach Colpaert both had a pair of individual victories and helped two winning relays. Yoder was first in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly while Colpaert beat the field in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

Tyler Yoder (diving) and Sprunger (100 breaststroke) each won their respective events.

Ashley LeFever was the lone dual winner for the SAHS girls, finishing first in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Olivia Von Gunten (200 freestyle), Bella Bailey (200 IM), Julia Grabau (diving), Hannah Neuenschwander (100 butterfly) and Amara Mikesell (100 backstroke) won their respective events.



Stars takes finale

BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team closed the regular season with a 56-32 win over the Richmond Red Devils.

South Adams (15-8), which opens Class 2A Sectional 36 play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against host Eastside, led 15-6 after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 29-19 at halftime. The Starfires, who have won three straight and seven of their last eight games, were out front 40-27 heading into the fourth quarter before pulling away down the stretch.

Lexi Dellinger and Madi Wurster led South Adams with 13 and 12 points respectively. Emilee Myers was third on the team with nine points and Sydney Pierce contributed seven points.

The South Adams junior varsity team lost, 35-33. Lydia Loshe had a dozen points for the Starfires and Kelsa Ortiz chipped in six points.
