Abby Wendel helped the Patriots win back-to-back conference titles.
She’s now had her hand in a collegiate conference championship.
Wendel, a 2016 Jay County High School graduate, contributed to the University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team as it won the River States Conference tournament championship with a 90-85 victory over Alice Lloyd on Tuesday.
She was 4-of-9 from the field for eight points with five rebounds, six assists and three steals as the NAIA Division II No. 22 Red Storm won a program-record 30th game of the season.
In the semifinal Saturday against West Virginia Tech, she had five points, four steals and a block in an 80-69 win, and she contributed eight points, three assists, two steals and a rebound in an 80-63 victory Feb. 21 over Brescia in the quarterfinal.
The Red Storm received a No. 5 seed for the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship tournament, and play No. 4 seed Morningside at 7 p.m. March 8.

Helped a record-setting relay for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team in the first day of competition at the NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships in Columbus, Georgia.
The junior joined Mendy De Rooi, Christina Klouda and Brittany Litke in swimming to a time of 7 minutes, 37.75 seconds, to break the program record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Smeltzer kicked off the relay with a split of 1:56.85 — which was the 10th-fastest start in program history — as the Patriots shaved more than two seconds off the school mark as they were runner-up in the event.
The championship meet continues through Saturday.
Collin Affolder
South Adams – 2014
Pushed his hitting streak to 14 games as the Bethel College baseball team started its 2018 campaign with a 1-1 record.
The outfielder had one hit and knocked in a run Friday as Bethel won the first game of a doubleheader against Cleary University, 7-6, at Northwestern High School.
Affolder also had a hit in fourat bats in game two, a 5-3 loss.
The former Starfire ended his junior season with a program-record 12-game hitting streak.
The Pilots travel to Vero Beach, Florida, for a stretch of eight games at Historic Dodgertown.

Made the most of his final home game for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team in an 88-61 victory over Hillsdale on Saturday onsenior night.
The guard had a 6-of-7 performance from behind the 3-point line on his way to a team-high 20 points. It was the second time this year the senior had totaled 20 or more points. The first was a Nov. 3 season-opening win over Indiana (Pennsylvania).
He was 6-of-9 total from the field and had a pair of free throws while also grabbing a career-high eight rebounds to go with one steal.
The NCAA Division II No. 11 Oilers (25-3) open the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament tonight at home against Kentucky Wesleyan.

Scored in double figures for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team as it dipped out of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament semifinal with 84-68 loss to Rochester.
On Wednesday, the Warriors (26-6) picked up an at-large bid as the No. 2 seed in the Liston Bracket of the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship tournament.
Against Rochester, Schwieterman was 4-of-6 from the field and made both of his free throws to finish with 10 points. He added three rebounds and a steal.
Indiana Tech meets No. 7 seed West Virginia Tech at 7:30 p.m. March 8 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Catherine Dunn

Fouled out of her final game of the season Feb. 21 as the Brescia University women’s basketball team lost in the opening round of the River States Conference tournament to the University of Rio Grande.
Dunn made one of her eight shots from the field and all four of her free throws to finish with six points. She had four rebounds, three steals and a block as the Bearcats (12-19) bowed out of the tournament 80-63 to the eventual champion Red Storm.

Ran for the Fort Wayne women’s track team as it competed in the Summit League Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at North Dakota State.
The senior was part of the distance medley relay team that finished last out of seven teams in 13 minutes, 24.82 seconds.
North Dakota State won the event with a time of 12:00.62 on its way to the team championship with 224 points. The Mastodons scored 12 points for seventh.
Chandler Ingle
South Adams – 2015
Made two appearances on the mound for the Goshen College baseball team in Georgia.
He tossed one inning of relief in a 12-11 loss on Sunday to Reinhardt University. The junior entered in the fifth inning with two runners on, induced a sacrifice fly and two flyouts.
On Monday, Ingle pitched 4.2 relief innings in a 5-3 victory over Toccoa Falls College. He scattered two hits, allowed two runs — one earned — and five walks while striking out three to record his first win of the season and second of his career for the Maple Leafs (3-5).

Competed for the Butler University women’s track team in the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday hosted by St. John’s University in Staten Island, New York.
Laux was the fourth leg of the 4x400-meter relay that was disqualified because of a false start.
