BERNE — The Starfires were on the verge of their eight-game winning streak coming to an end.
A pair of seniors kept it going.
Isaiah Baumgartner had a two-run triple and Mark Clary hit a walk-off single as the South Adams High School baseball team earned a 7-6 victory over the Blackford Bruins on Monday at Harry F. Anderson Field.
Blackford scored twice in the top of the sixth inning for a 6-4 lead, and the Class 2A No. 2 Starfires (13-1) were down to their final three outs.
Grant Besser walked to start the bottom of the seventh and Nic Stuber singled. After a strikeout, a pickoff at first and another walk, Baumgartner drove the first pitch of his at bat to center field to tie the score. Two pitches later Clary hit in the winning run.
Baumgartner also had a double and totaled five RBIs. Collin Shaffer collected two hits, and Joe Stuber also had a single.
SA shuts out ’Dogs
BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team shut out the New Haven Bulldogs on Monday with a 5-0 win.
Julia Grabau moved to 9-0 on the season at No. 2 singles. She defeated Hannah Bethay 6-0, 6-1. Hannah Dull (8-1) knocked off Gabrielle Shuler 6-1, 6-0 in their No. 3 singles match.
Haley Gerber (5-4), the Starfires’ top singles player, had to battle Erica Miller. Gerber took the first set 6-3 before dropping the second 6-1. Gerber claimed the tiebreak set 10-6 to get the victory.
At No. 1 doubles, Breanna Potts and Jade Farlow beat Cheyenne Hieber and Kaitlin Shuman 6-0, 6-0, while Katrina Fosnaugh and Cassie Yoder earned a 6-0, 6-1 win against Audrey Kuhn and Mikayla Bestman.
Stars fall to Bruins
MARION — South Adams’ boys golf team fell to the Blackford Bruins on Monday at Walnut Creek Golf Course.
The Bruins earned shot 177, beating the Starfires by 60 strokes.
South Adams senior David Muselman shot a 46 to lead the Starfires in the defeat. Eli Hamrick was second on the team with 56, and Blaine Harruff shot 60 for third. Braden Bixler rounded out the team score with 75.
Spencer Fear also competed, but his 77 did not factor into the Starfires’ total.
