BERNE — The Starfires’ needed to win to clinch the conference.

Now they have to rely on another team.

The South Adams High School baseball team committed four errors and allowed three unearned runs on Thursday in a 5-2 loss to county and conference rival Adams Central at Harry F. Anderson Field.

South Adams (18-2, 5-1 Allen County Athletic Conference), which is the top-ranked team in Class 2A, had its 14-game winning streak snapped. It now has to rely on Heritage beating Adams Central on Saturday to win the conference title.

Adams Central (13-6, 4-1 ACAC) scored once in the top of the second inning and tacked on two more thanks to a Parker Bates home run. South Adams trimmed the score to 3-2 in the fourth inning before the Jets notched a run in each of the fifth and seventh innings.

Grant Besser hit a double and Nic Stuber drove in two runs for South Adams. Mark Clary also had a hit for the Stars.

Collin Shaffer suffered the loss as he allowed five runs — one earned — on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.



Wendel shines in win

FORT RECOVERY — Cade Wendel had another strong outing.

As a result, the Indians got another win.

Wendel threw six strong innings Thursday, shutting down the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders as the Fort Recovery High School baseball team got a 5-1 win.

The Division III No. 7 Indians (18-4), open host the Fostoria Redmen at 5 p.m. tonight in the Elida District sectional final.

Fort Recovery scored the first run of the game in the second inning before adding one more in the third. A three-run effort in the fourth inning made it 5-0, and the Roughriders got their only run in the top of the sixth.

Wendel allowed one unearned run on just two hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked two in his first start since no-hitting the Minster Wildcats on May 1.



Late runs sink Stars

BERNE — The South Adams softball team surrendered 10 runs over the final three innings on Thursday in a 12-3 loss to the Adams Central Jets.

The Class 2A No. 5 Starfires (15-5, 5-1 ACAC), who clinched the ACAC title on Tuesday, led 3-2 after the first inning. Both teams didn’t plate runs over the next three innings before the Jets scored four times in the fifth inning for a 6-3 advantage. Adams Central tacked on three more runs in each of the next two innings.

Isabella Ramirez and Tori Raugh both had doubles for South Adams, and Raugh drove in two runs.

Kayla LeFever and Myers also had singles for the Starfires.

Anna Nussbaum shouldered the loss, as she gave up nine runs on 13 hits over six innings. She struck out eight and walked three.



Stars blast Jets

MONROE — The South Adams junior varsity team out-hit Adams Central by a three-to-one margin on Thursday in a 11-2 thrashing of the host Jets.

South Adams had a 3-2 lead after the third inning before breaking the game open with a six-run fourth. It added to the lead with two runs one inning later.

Alex and Austin Gorney combined to go 4-for-8 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and four runs. Aaron Timmons tallied an RBI triple, while Luke Yoder and Christian Summersett both had two hits. Cameron Poge had a team-best three RBIs.



SA beats Bluffton

BLUFFTON — Julia Grabau stayed perfect for the year on Thursday, helping the South Adams girls tennis team to a 4-1 victory against the Bluffton Tigers.

Grabau won her No. 2 singles match over Ava Ringer 6-1, 6-0 as she moved to 14-0 on the season. At No. 3 singles, Hannah Dull (12-2) knocked off Olivia Johnson 6-3, 6-0.

Haley Gerber (8-6) dropped her No. 1 singles match to Hannah Gerber, 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Breanna Potts and Jade Farlow improved to 11-3 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Maranda Craighead and Kirsten Bennett. At No. 2 doubles, Katrina Fosnaugh and Cassie Yoder earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Claudia Vitz and Theresa Esterhai 6-1, 6-0, moving to 10-4.



Eagles at nationals

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — West Jay Middle School’s archery team finished with 3,094 points on Thursday at the NASP Eastern Nationals.

The Eagles were 62nd in the Middle School division.

Jaidi Brunson led the Eagles with 271. Ben Hunter and Conner Markwell were second with 269 and Lizzie Dollar was fourth with 259 and Dominick Newsome was fifth with 258.

Raven Dale and Aaron Funkhouser tied for sixth on the squad with 256, Paige Gillette (255) was eighth, Peyton James (253) ninth, Kailey Vance (252) 10th, Peyton Vaughn (251) 11th and Gabriella Bilbrey (245) was 12th.



Flamespray beats Williams

Flamespray Machine Service picked up a 19-6 victory over Williams Auto Parts in Portland Junior League’s Rookie baseball division.

Mitchell Byrum had three singles to lead Flamespray, which also got two singles from John Pineda and Roman Clamme. Grant Fennig contributed a double and a single and Bentley Brunswick had one hit.

Carter Hartman, Jace Vance, Gabriel Enyart and Kevin Dues all had doubles for Williams. Easton Sprunger collected two singles in the loss.



Four lead in victory

Four players combined for 16 hits on Thursday in leading Pak-A-Sak to a 17-4 victory over Barnett’s Auto Parts in PJL’s Rookie baseball.

Kadyn Carpenter, Alex Miller, Brayden O’Brien and Cooper Reynolds all went 4-for-4 for Pak-A-Sak, which also got two hits each from Kayden Comer, Cruz Darby, Eli Homan and Caleb Sibray.

Barnett’s stats were not provided.
