CELINA, Ohio — Collin Haines was on fire through his first nine holes.

He led all players by one stroke.

The final three were his kryptonite, and he was left in second place.

Haines, a Jay County High School senior, finished as the runner-up Saturday in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament at Celina Lynx Golf Club. 

Bluffton won the team title with a score of 369. Southern Wells totaled 377 for second, and Adams Central was third with 393.

South Adams and Jay County had identical scores of 401, but the Starfires edged the Patriots for fifth place by using a fifth-player tiebreaker.

Haines birdied the par-3 third hole before a bogey on the par-3 fourth. He then birdied the par-5 eighth as he made the turn at 1-under par 35. The future IU South Bend Titan was 1 over par heading into the final three holes, which he bogeyed to finish with a career-best 76.

Griffin Mann, a freshman, was second on the team with 102, and Devin Harris was three strokes behind at 105. Joey Hall fired 118 to complete the Patriots’ team score.

David Muselman led South Adams with an 83, joining Haines as a first team all-conference player.

Eli Hamrick was second for SAHS with 100, and Blaine Harruff shot 107. Spencer Fear finished with 111.



Stars beat Apaches

BERNE — The South Adams softball team broke open a tie game with four runs in the fourth inning Saturday en route to a 14-7 victory over the Wabash Apaches.

South Adams (17-7) scored five times in the third to tie the game at seven apiece after the Apaches built a lead by scoring twice in the first inning, three times in the second and two more times in the third.

But the Starfires took the lead in the fourth inning before adding three more insurance runs in the sixth.

Lexi Dellinger and Alivia Bergman both smacked triples for the Starfires. Dellinger finished with two hits, and both players drove in a run.

Jenna Myers had two doubles, a single and one RBI, while Tori Raugh collected four singles and three RBIs. Kayla LeFever, Emilie Hammell and Josie Hall had two hits each.

Jade Baker got the win, throwing seven innings while allowing seven runs — four earned — on 11 hits. She struck out four and walked two.



Therapeutics wins

Jay County Therapeutics picked up a 9-8 victory over First Bank of Berne on Saturday in Portland Junior League’s Minor softball division.

Dakota Chowning smacked two doubles and two RBIs. Courtney Harris chipped in a double, while Savannah Lugar and Mallory Winner each had two singles and an RBI. Morgan DeHoff finished with two hits, as Jayla Huelskamp and Cassie Petro both had singles.

Carley Trinidad had the lone hit for First Bank of Berne. She also had an RBI.



Fisher edges Berne

Fisher Packing edged First Bank of Berne 12-11 on Saturday in junior league action.

Nevaeh Armstrong and Kadence Allred both had two singles for Fisher. Layliana ElDeeb contributed a single.

Jenna Dues, Alexis Sibray and Carley Trinidad all had singles for First Bank of Berne.



Loy’s tops FCC

Loy’s Realty defeated FCC (Indiana) on Saturday, 17-7 in the Sandy Koufax division of Portland Junior League.

Cam Hoover had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and two RBIs for Loy’s, which also got a triple, two doubles and a pair of RBIs from Sam Dunlavy. Zack Twigg chipped in two singles and an RBI.

Hunter LeMaster led FCC in the loss by collecting two hits and three RBIs. Owen Ransom contributed two hits and an RBI, while Gavin McCrosson hit a single.



PG-14 gets a win

PG-14 earned its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Kiwanis 11-10.

Landon Blowers and Maddox Huffman had three runs each for PG-14. Leighton Brown had one run while Rhysin Blowers and Layne Reidt both had a run.

Sylas Wenk, Cole Carpenter, Freddie Lingo and Gavin Thomas all had two runs in the loss for Kiwanis. Austin Curtis and Chance Morgan both scored once.
