MUNCIE — Parker Nichols beat the Owls by himself.

Nichols scored 13 points on Monday, helping the West Jay Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team to a 34-11 victory over the host Burris Owls.

The Eagle eighth grade team lost, 58-16.

Nichols added seven rebounds and four steals in leading the WJMS seventh graders. Jackson Edwards followed with seven points, and Liam Garringer finished with six points. Trevin Dennington chipped in four points while Corey Lenington and Darren Fisher had two points apiece.

Skyler Bee and Garringer had four points each in the eighth grade game. Gabe Goodspeed and Peyton Bennett finished with three points each, and Nichols added two points.



EJ, Norwell split

East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams split with the Norwell Knights on Monday.

The eighth grade Chiefs (1-0) defeated the Knights 37-26, and the seventh graders (0-1) fell 40-29.

Renna Schwieterman scored 20 points for the EJMS eighth graders, who also got eight points from Lydia Keihn, four points from Bralee VanSkyock and three from Sophie Saxman. Kylie Carreno finished with two points.

Saxman led the seventh graders with 11 points, and Hannah Laux was second with seven points. VanSkyock tallied six points while Breanna Dirksen and Danielle May both had two points. Cash Hollowell added a free throw.



Chief boys fall

OSSIAN — The seventh and eighth grade East Jay boys basketball teams both dropped the season opener on Monday to the host Norwell Knights.

The eighth graders lost 54-34, and the seventh graders were doubled-up, 35-17.

Bennett Weitzel led the eighth grade team (0-1) with 10 points, while Dawson Hundley was second with six points. Carter Link, Josh Dowlen, Dusty Pearson and Owen Ransom finished with four point each. Conner McFarland had two points.

Wesley Bihn led the seventh graders (0-1) with six points. Zac McAbee and Justin DeHoff both had four points, and Sam Myers recorded two points.

Bryce Wenk chipped in a free throw.
