The Patriots didn’t give up a point in the third quarter.
It helped them rally to beat their rival from Delaware County.
The Jay County High School freshman boys basketball team used solid defensive play in the third quarter to knock off the Delta Eagles on Monday, 28-23.
The Patriots (1-0) were behind 9-6 after the first quarter and went into intermission trailing 17-11. But an 8-0 margin in the third quarter helped them grab a 19-17 lead and they carried it the rest of the way in the season opener.
Quinn Faulkner led Jay County with eight points, while Darius Esparza and Adam Muhlenkamp had six points apiece. Adrek Pogue contributed four points as Trenton Alexander and Camdin Harrison tallied two points each.
Star boys split
BERNE — The South Adams Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams split with Southern Wells on Monday.
The eighth grade Starfires won 37-29, while the seventh grade team fell 26-19.
Kyle Minger led the eighth graders (1-1, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) with 10 points, while Brock Banter and Gavin Myers tallied six points each. Matt Steiner and Brady Beall contributed five points apiece.
Owen Wanner had 17 points in the loss for the seventh graders (1-1, 0-1 ACAC). Isaac Dee tallied the other two points while hauling in a team-high 10 rebounds.
