The Patriots were at home for the first time this season.
It helped the girls pick up another win, and the boys narrowly missed getting their first victory of the season.
Jay County High School’s swim teams split with the Anderson Indians on Thursday.
The girls moved to 2-0 with a 185-107 victory, while the boys dipped to 0-2 with a 153-152 loss.
Vivienne Kunkler and Eliza Bader both had a pair of wins. Kunkler was first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 15.57 seconds, and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.54.
Bader finished the 50 freestyle in 25.75 seconds for her first victory, then followed with a win in the 100 freestyle in 58.26 seconds. Ashlyn Dow (200 individual medley – 2:24) and Emily Dues (diving – 154.8 points) also had individual wins.
Jay County’s girls also won the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Skyler Myers paced the JCHS boys with two wins, finishing first in the 50 freestyle (24.15) and 100 freestyle (55.68). The Patriots also won the 200 medley relay.
Jay falls to Trojans
NEW CASTLE — The Jay County girls basketball team lost a lead in the second quarter and didn’t recover in a 51-47 loss to the New Castle Trojans on Thursday.
Jay County (2-5) led 14-12 after one quarter but trailed 32-24 at halftime. The Patriots got within one, 39-38, with one quarter to play but fell short.
Shelby Caldwell led the Patriots with 21 points, her third straight game with 20 or more points. Freshman Madison Dirksen followed with a career-high 14 points, and Kendra Muhlenkamp chipped in nine points.
Jay County’s junior varsity team moved to 2-5 on the year with a 42-36 win. Aubrie Schwieterman had a season-high 17 points, and Grace Saxman tallied nine points. Andrea Jutte chipped in eight points.
Chiefs sweep Warriors
East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams swept the Woodlan Warriors on Thursday.
The eighth graders won 51-37, while the seventh grade team defeated Woodlan 50-9.
Carter Link scored 14 points to lead the EJMS eighth graders (4-1, 2-0 Allen County Athletic Conference). Blake Bogenschutz joined him in double figures with 10 points, as Bennett Weitzel and Josh Dowlen chipped in eight points apiece.
Sam Myers’ 15 points led the Chief seventh grade team (2-3, 1-1 ACAC), and Zach McAbee was second with eight points. Abraham Dirksen and Luke Vormohr finished with seven and six points respectively.
EJ tops Woodlan
WOODBURN — The East Jay girls basketball teams both picked up victories Thursday on the road against the Woodlan Warriors.
The eighth graders moved to 5-1 with a 28-23 victory, while the seventh graders improved to 4-1 with a 37-17 triumph.
Renna Schwieterman tallied a dozen points for the eighth graders, who also got six points from Kylie Carreno and four apiece from Lydia Keihn and Cash Hollowell. Eden Abshire chipped in two points.
Sophie Saxman and Breanna Dirksen scored 13 and 10 points respectively for the EJMS seventh graders. Bralee VanSkyock and Hannah Laux had five points each, and Molly Muhlenkamp added four points.
Eagle 7th stays perfect
DUNKIRK — The West Jay middle school seventh grade boys basketball team stayed perfect on Thursday with a 32-15 win over the Eastbrook Panthers.
The seventh graders lost, 39-17.
Parker Nichols led the WJMS seventh graders (6-0) with 12 points, while Liam Garringer and Jackson Edwards tallied nine points each. Trevin Dunnington chipped in two points.
Skyler Bee and Peyton James had six and five points respectively for the Eagle eighth graders.
Peyton Bennett and Tavin Wasson had three points apiece.
