FORT RECOVERY – It's the chant every time they break the huddle.
“One team.”
It means each player giving it her all, every point, no matter where she is in the rotation.
It's laying out for a dig. It's sprinting toward a ball destined to hit the bleacher, only to have it bounce off a basketball backboard and bounce back in play. It's having mutual trust between everyone on the court.
One team.
An all-around effort by the Fort Recovery High School volleyball team kept its hopes for a conference championship intact Tuesday as the Indians swept the defending state champion New Bremen Cardinals 25-14, 25-23, 25-20 at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
“It takes every component,” said FRHS senior Hannah Knapke, who helped the Division IV No. 3 Indians (19-2, 7-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) inch one more win closer to the program's first conference championship since 1989.
“It takes serve receive, it takes setting, it takes hitting,” she added. “Coming together as one team.”
It also takes determination, which FRHS coach Chelsea Kahlig noticed from her team from the start.
“They had a little fire, a little motivation from the get-go,” she said. “We're sort of, kind of the underdog and I feel like they handled that pressure really, really well.”
The Indians — they travel to Versailles on Thursday, a win guaranteeing them a least a share of the MAC title — ripped seven aces in the first set, including two of the first three points and four of the first seven, as they opened a commanding 6-1 advantage.
“These are 16-, 17- and 18-year-old girls playing in a really big game,” said New Bremen coach Diana Kramer, whose second-ranked Cardinals dipped to 18-3 (6-2 MAC). “They're allowed to make mistakes. This is just a part of life.
“This is a life lesson tonight these girls learned.”
Fort Recovery, which knocked off top-ranked St. Henry last week, appeared to be in control of the second set too as it was ahead 11-4, but New Bremen swung momentum in its favor thanks to a Macy Puthoff kill. That sparked a seven-point Cardinal run that tied the game at 11-all and forced Kahlig into a timeout.
During that rotation, the Indians had trouble getting the ball to their attackers. Twice they were whistled for double hits, and on two other occasions Cassidy Martin, who led all players with a dozen kills, had attacks sail out of bounds.
The Indians didn't get the next point out of the break, but a Martin kill tied the set at 12 apiece, and it was later locked at 15, 17 and 18 before the Indians nabbed a 19-18 lead it never gave up.
“I think we become so comfortable with each other we know who's going to go after what.” Knapke said. “(Being) able to know who's on both sides of you and know who's going to take (the ball) and communicate well.”
Paige Fortkamp was second on the team with six kills, and Olivia Patch tallied four kills to go with her team-best three blocks. Madi Rammel, one of four seniors with Brooke Gaerke, Martin and Knapke (14 digs), had 26 assists and three kills.
New Bremen opened a 3-1 advantage in the third set before Fort Recovery grabbed 10 of the next 12 points and it never looked back. As the Indians were clinging to a 23-20 lead, Brooke Kahlig chased a ball toward the FRHS bench that was destined to reach the bleachers, only to have the ball carom off a basketball backboard and stay in play. After a few more volleys, the Indians got the point and later put the match away.
“The game of volleyball is a game of inches,” Kramer said. “It is a game of momentum and we didn't have that momentum from the very first point tonight. We showed some fight, but not as much fight as I would have liked to tonight.
“Fort Recovery is a really great team. I don't want to say that we played bad … Fort Recovery played really, really good. All the credit goes to them and their coach.
“We got out-coached tonight, and as a result of getting out-coached you get out-played.”
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery wasn't as dominant as its varsity counterparts but still managed to sweep New Bremen, 25-22, 25-23.
Ava Bubp and Marissa Gaerke led the Indians with three kills apiece.
Hope Wendel contributed a pair of kills to go with her team-high 10 assists.
Maria Hartings paced the defense with seven digs, while Gaerke chipped in four digs.
