Patriot boys tennis drops match to Winchester

For the second time this week the Patriots came up short.

This time it was against a sectional rival.

The Jay County High School boys tennis team dropped a 4-1 match on senior night to the Winchester Golden Falcons on Thursday in what could be a precursor to the sectional tournament, which begins Sept. 26 at JCHS.

Seniors Gavin Randall and Conner Benter picked up the only victory for Jay County (3-4) 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against Grant and Garrett Wagner.

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Gabe Blankenship and Xavier Ninde fell to Payton Sparks and Beman Welch 6-3, 7-5.

Making his No. 1 singles debut, JCHS freshman Crosby Heniser fell to Alex Pegg 6-3, 6-3. Sheldon Upp dropped his No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-2 to Nick Dunica, and Calvin Whitney fell to Ross Culy at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1.

In junior varsity action, Jay County won 2-1. Jacob Schoenlein and Gavin Myers teamed for a doubles win, while Joseph Littler won a singles match.



Tribe beats Jays

DELPHOS, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s volleyball team barreled its way to a sweep of the host St. John’s Blue Jays on Thursday, 25-16, 25-24, 25-6.

Paige Jutte paced the Indians (11-1, 3-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) offensively with eight kills. Paige Fortkamp contributed six kills and Cassy Martin chipped in five.

Martin notched team-highs in both aces (nine) and blocks (three), and Madi Rammel tallied 17 assists.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 25-10, 25-5. Whitley Rammel, Marissa Gaerke, Grace Guggenbiller and Melissa Laux all had three kills.



SA loses to Patriots

BERNE — The South Adams volleyball team dropped its first Allen County Athletic Conference match of the season Thursday with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 setback to the Heritage Patriots.

Gabriella Bailey and Shaelynn Bowman both had 10 kills to lead the Starfires (12-7, 2-1 ACAC). Carlie Sealscott followed with eight kills.

The Starfires’ junior varsity team lost, 25-8, 25-21. Savannah Alberson and Makayla Hamrick had three kills each.



Indians fall to Tigers

CELINA, Ohio — Jalyn Bruns was two shots off the lead Thursday as the Fort Recovery girls golf team fell to the Versailles Tigers, 208-233 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.

Bruns shot a 52 to lead the Indians, who also got a 56 from Shelby Stammen and a 62 from Devin Jutte. Kendra Dues completed the team score with 63.



Tribe drops match

VERSAILLES, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team dropped a match to the Versailles Tigers on Thursday, 185-211 at Stillwater Valley Golf Club.

Grant Knapke and Carson Rammel led the Indians by finishing with rounds of 45 and 48 respectively. Blayne Tobe shot 57 for the No. 3 score, and Derek Locthefeld completed the team total by shooting 61.

 

Second sinks Jay

DECATUR — A pair of goals in the second half sank the Jay County boys soccer team as it fell to the Bellmont Braves on Thursday, 2-1.

Hunter Shumaker scored to put Jay County (2-6) out front at halftime, 1-0, but the Braves netted the equalizer and go-ahead goals in the final 40 minutes.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 2-1. Brody Auker found the back of the net for the Patriots.



Stars beat Archers

BERNE — The South Adams girls soccer team picked up a 4-0 shutout over the South Side Archers on Thursday.

Kristen Wynn scored three goals for the hat trick in leading the Starfires (6-3-1). Alison Smith also had a goal.

Emilee Myers, Kayla LeFever, Macie Hirschy and Wynn all had assists.



 

Chiefs sweep Eagles

All three East Jay Middle School volleyball teams beat county rival West Jay on Thursday.

The EJMS eighth graders won 13-25, 25-20, 15-8, the seventh graders got a 25-14, 25-23 win, while the sixth graders picked up a 25-24, 25-17 victory.

Renna Schwieterman notched nine kills for the EJMS eighth graders (2-4). She also had three aces on her way to nine service points. Madison Brunswick contributed two kills, two aces and three points.

Brenna Haines led the Chief seventh graders with three kills. Riah Champ tallied 16 points on 12 aces. 

Morgan DeHoff led the East Jay sixth graders with two kills and two digs. Meredith Dirksen had five aces and 11 points.

West Jay stats were not provided.



Homan leads Indians

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Troy Homan reached the end zone five times Thursday, leading the Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade football team to a 34-28 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals.

The eighth graders lost, 34-14.

Reece Guggenbiller contributed a pair of two-point conversions for the FRMS seventh graders (2-2).

In the eighth grade tilt, Cale Rammel and Wyatt Grover both had touchdowns as the Indians fell to 0-4.
