FORT RECOVERY – The Indians were struggling.
Their attackers had trouble finding the inside of the white lines and the blocking struggled to get in the right position.
As Tribe coach Chelsea Kahlig used her final timeout of the third set, she told her squad something it didn't like to hear.
It was getting outplayed.
But a Cassy Martinkill stopped a 6-0 Bulldog run and kick-started a streak of six points the other way as the Division IV No. 3 Fort Recovery High School volleyball team completed the comeback to sweep the Celina Bulldogs, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.
“It was an ugly match,” said Kahlig, whose team continues Midwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday against New Knoxville. “Everyone plays them. There are tons of excuses out there but I told the girls we're not going to use them.
“You just have to use it to get better and learn from it. They still found a way to plug away and get the win.”
Celina (5-6) controlled the early goings of the third set because Fort Recovery (12-1) struggled offensively. Aserve error, a lift call and consecutive mishaps on sets put the Bulldogs out front, 5-1. The Indians fought back, however, tying the score on five separate occasions.
But an attack error that sailed long began a stretch of five consecutive points for Celina, forcing Kahlig to burn her second stoppage.
“I don't think [the team] liked hearing that they were outworking us,” Kahlig said. “I think they literally just got out there and were like, 'This isn't happening, this is our court.'
“We had a lot of unforced errors.”
Celina nabbed the first point out of the break, but then Martin blasted one of her team-high 10 kills to stop the bleeding. Then the Indians ran off five more points, including a pair of Paige Fortkamp kills, a Madi Rammelkill and a Martin tip, to tie it up at 18-all.
“All of the sudden we just let up on defense,” Celina coach Amy Sutter said. “We quit transitioning hard and we quit being a little proactive on defense.
“We just let balls drop and we shouldn't have.”
Trailing 21-20 later in the set, Olivia Patch rifled a kill off the Celina block to begin Fort Recovery's run of five straight points to complete the comeback and the sweep.
The Indians never trailed in the opening set as Paige Jutte (seven kills) made her presence known on the first point by blasting a kill down the left side of the court. The Tribe was ahead 7-2 before the Bulldogs got six of the next seven points to tie the score. But Rammel broke the tie with a kill as FRHS registered three consecutive points.
Back-to-back points got the Bulldogs within one again, 11-10, but Patch (four kills) hammered home a kill to start a 6-0 Indian run and Celina never recovered.
The Bulldogs got the first two points of the second set but once the Indians were back out front, 7-4, the visitors stayed close but could not get within three points.
Sutter was rather frank when describing what it took to rebound from the first two sets.
“Just putting our big girl panties on and trying to go after balls,” she said. “We made an adjustment on the block a little bit.
Senior Maddy Luebke and sophomore Maria Lutz were a force at the net, but mostly in the third, as they disrupted the Fort Recovery offense. Luebke finished with four blocks.
“I thought our passing was a little off the net and it was hard to run (Martin) in the middle,” Kahlig said. “It was so predictable that we were going high outside to Paige (Jutte). It is hard for her to get around a block when (Martin) is out of the option.”
Rammel was second on the team with eight kills, and Patch bested Luebke's effort by notching five blocks.
Junior varsity
Marissa Gaerke notched seven kills and Whitley Rammel finished with six as Fort Recovery swept Celina by asore of 25-20 in both sets.
Hope Wendel was third on the team with three kills, while Melissa Laux and Ashlyn Bechtol had two kills apiece. Brenna Homan's 11 digs were tops on the team, while Wendel was 13-of-14 from the service line and recorded 20 assists.
