FORT RECOVERY — The gauntlet is just starting for the Indians.

They got the Rangers out of the way Tuesday.

Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team knocked off Midwest Athletic Conference rival New Knoxville Rangers 26-24, 25-21, 27-25 at Fort Site Fieldhouse.

The Division IV No. 3 Indians moved to 13-1 (4-0 MAC) after sweeping the Rangers, who finished 18th in the most recent Division IV poll.

Fort Recovery meets Coldwater, which finished 11th in the most recent Division III poll, on Thursday and Division IV No. 6 Marion Local on Sept. 27.

Cassy Martin led the Fort Recovery attack with 18 kills, while pacing the defense with five blocks. Paige Fortkamp joined Martin in double figures with 10 kills. Paige Jutte and Madi Rammel contributed seven kills. Rammel also set up her teammates to the tune of 39 assists.

The Indians’ junior varsity team also won, 25-15, 26-24. Marissa Gaerke finished with eight kills and 11 digs. Hope Wendel tallied 17 assists and Whitley Rammel tallied five kills.



Doubles gets a win

MUNCIE — The No. 1 doubles team was the only position to get a win Tuesday as the Jay County boys tennis team fell to the host Muncie Central Bearcats, 4-1.

Xavier Ninde and Conner Benter outlasted Zach Abrell and Tyler Walker for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory. Gavin Randall and Sheldon Upp battled Austin South and Nick Phillips at No. 2 doubles but eventually lost 6-7 (7-3), 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 1 singles, Gabe Blankenship fell to Charlie Hammock 6-1, 6-0. Crosby Heniser dropped his No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0, and Christian Romero lost to Jacob Emert at No. 3 singles 61, 6-3.

Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 4-1. Calvin Whitney got a singles victory. Teaming for doubles wins were Frankie Crump and Gavin Myers, Jacob Schoenlein and Darius Esparza, and Damian Hicks and Konner Sommers.



Senior climbs ladder

Kendra Muhlenkamp moved into third on the career scoring list on Tuesday in leading the Jay County girls soccer team to a 10-0 thrashing of the Delta Eagles.

Muhlenkamp scored four times. Her second four-goal game of the season pushed her season total to 20 and her career mark to 55. 

She surpassed 2002 graduate and former coach Abby Arnold (Champ) with 52.

The senior trails 2016 graduate Gabbie Mann (63) and 2018 grad Lucy Laux (58).

Hannah Phillips also scored twice for Jay County (6-3-2), which travels to Yorktown on Thursday. Eliza Bader, Mackynzie Fairchild and Karlie Bullard also notched goals. It was the first career tally for Fairchild.

Payton McCoy added a goal and an assist. Anhely Montes finished with three assists and Klarisa Hemmelgarn had one helper.



Stars blank Indians

BERNE — The South Adams girls soccer team pitched its fifth consecutive shutout on Tuesday with a 9-0 triumph over the Mississinewa Indians.

The last time the Starfires (7-3-1) surrendered a goal was Aug. 28 in a 4-2 defeat to Jay County. Since then they’ve kept Muncie Central, New Haven, Heritage, South Side and now the Indians without a goal.

Madi Smith scored four times for South Adams, which also got two-goal efforts from Kayla LeFever and Kristen Wynn. Emilee Myers also had a goal.

LeFever finished with a pair of assists, as Myers and Wynn both had an assist.

Jenna Myers stopped both shots she faced, and Kelsa Ortiz made one save in goal.
