Each of the last two times the Patriots faced the Panthers, Ryan Schlechty has thrown a no-hitter.

He almost made it 3-for-3.

Schlechty had another strong outing against Eastbrook and his teammates provided plenty of offense as the Jay County High School baseball team picked up a 12-1 win in five innings on Tuesday.

Schlechty, a senior, had a clean first three innings before his bid for a third straight no-hitter was broken up in the fourth inning. In all, he allowed two hits and one unearned run over four innings of work. He also struck out seven.

Jay County (3-1) scored a run in each of the first two innings before breaking out the bats for a seven-run third. Michael Schlechty, Gabe Faulkner, Brayden Mock each had RBI singles, and Noah Arbuckle blasted a two-run double. A pair of Panther errors also allowed two runs to score.

The Patriots pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Fugiett’s double and two singles paved the way for Jay County, and Arbuckle finished with two doubles. Quinn Faulkner contributed two hits, and Cameron Henry also recorded his first varsity hit.

Jay girls second

MONROE — Jay County’s girls track team finished second in a three-team meet against Allen County Athletic Conference foes on Tuesday.

South Adams scored 70 points for first, and Jay County finished with 61 for second. Host Adams Central scored 36 points.

The boys teams for Jay County and South Adams both scored 73 points. Adams Central totaled 10.

In the girls’ competition, Jay County won both the 4x100- and the 4x400-meter relays. Renee Omstead teamed with Shea Bailey, Calli Stigleman and Carlie Bullard to win the 4x100 relay, then joined Grace Saxman, Halle Hill and Ashlyn Dow for first in the 4x400 relay.

Noah Harris (110 hurdles), Caleb Webster (100 dash), Isaac Robbins (300 hurdles), Skyler Myers (3,200 run) and Gavin Randall (high jump) all had individual wins for JCHS. The Patriots’ 4x800 relay (Zade Fosnaugh, Isaka Dalei, Tayler Smeltzer and Myers) and the 4x100 relay (Trey Castillo, Nathanael Day, Randall and Webster) also finished first.

Jay JV outlasts Stars

BERNE — The Jay County junior varsity baseball team overcame an early deficit to outlast South Adams on Tuesday, 14-12, in five innings.

South Adams (1-2) gained an 8-0 lead after two innings thanks to a five-run first frame. Jay County (2-2) mounted its comeback in the third with four runs, and went into the fourth inning behind 9-4. The visitors scored six runs to take the lead and never gave it up.

Caleb Hale had two doubles for the Patriots, who also got three singles from Kess McBride and two hits each from Darius Esparza, Gavin Myers and Logan McGinnis. Drew Powers, McGinnis and McBride all knocked in three runs each.

Tommy Herman and Tyler Yoder each had doubles for the Starfires. Kamden Yoder collected four singles and three RBIs, while Colin Subler tallied three hits and two RBIs.

Powers got the win in relief. He allowed four runs — one earned — on five hits, struck out two and walked three in 2 2/3 innings.

Streak hits three

The Jay County softball team lost its third straight game to start the season Tuesday with a 6-2 setback to the Eastbrook Panthers.

Jay County (0-3) tied the game at one run apiece in the second inning but fell behind 3-1 in the third. A run in the fourth inning trimmed the margin back to one run, but the Panthers scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh for the win.

Offensive statistics for Jay County were not provided.
