FORT WAYNE — It took nearly eight innings for the TinCap offense to come alive in a walk-off win on Tuesday night.

It didn't take long to get going Wednesday.

And Ryan Weathers had another stellar outing on the mound.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps got the only lead it needed in the bottom of the first inning and Weathers picked up his first professional win on Wednesday as the TinCaps beat the Dayton Dragons 12-2 at Parkview Field.

“I wasn't sure what we were going to get today with the first morning game and the quick turnover from last night,” said TinCap manager Anthony Contreras, whose team got a walk-off, 5-4 win over the Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) the previous night. “They came out firing in that first inning. Weathers was on top of his game and when we have that type of pitching performance and our offense kind of clicking like that good things can happen.”

It was the third consecutive win for the TinCaps (5-2), the San Diego Padres' Class-A affiliate who will look for the series sweep on Thursday.

Weathers, the Padres' first-round draft pick last year and No. 10 prospect, struck out nine but didn't get the decision in the TinCaps' season opener. The left-handed son of former professional David Weathers cruised his way through the first five innings.

Mariel Bautista reached on an error in the first, but the younger Weathers picked him off trying to steal second.

Two frames later Weathers gave up a single but nothing else. In the fifth inning, Juan Martinez hit a chopper up the middle that went off of Weathers' glove and caromed to second baseman Xavier Edwards, whose throw to Blake Hunt at first was a tad late.

But like Bautista, Martinez was caught stealing.

Dayton (2-5) scored twice of Weathers in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI triple down the left field line by Shard Munroe that was just out of reach of a diving Grant Little. Jay Schuyler singled home Munroe, and after a wild pitch on a third strike Weathers found himself in a jam with two outs and runners at the corners.

Contreras said he went back and forth as to whether or not to take out Weathers with Trent Shelton warming up in the bullpen. Contreras walked to the mound, told the 19-year-old from Loretto, Tennessee, to finish the inning.

Weathers eventually struck out Bren Spillane for his eighth and final punchout of the day.

“I haven't pitched here long but (Contreras) knows I don't like coming out of games,” Weathers, who scattered five hits over six innings, didn't allow a walk and pushed his season strikeout total to 17, said of his brief meeting with Contreras. “He told me 'This is your guy. This is your inning. Finish it.'”

Dayton starting pitcher Jacob Heatherly, the Reds' No. 23 overall prospect, struggled and wasn't able to get out of the first inning. Hunt singled to score the first run of the game, then Heatherly walked both Luis Almanzar and Juan Fernandez with bases loaded for a 3-0 TinCap lead.

It was an advantage that let Weathers let loose a little bit afterward.

“It definitely gives you a little wiggle room knowing you don't have to be as perfect even though as pitchers we want to be perfect,” he said. “Gives you a little room for error even though you don't want that. It makes you definitely way more comfortable than a zero-zero game.”

After going out front 4-0 on an RBI ground out by Tucupita Marcano in the second inning. Fort Wayne scored twice in the fifth and three times in each of the sixth and seventh innings. In all, the TinCaps had 11 hits, including a double by Ruiz, who has hit safely in all six games he's played and is batting .440 in that span.

Edwards and Little had three hits apiece.

“It's always encouraging to have a young team like this, especially when it's early in the season and it's cold, to be able to produce runs like that,” Contreras said. The TinCaps' dozen runs was a season high, three more than their 9-5 win on Monday against Dayton. “Keeps us optimistic that when it gets warm we'll be able to do a lot of special things out there.

“It's just a tribute to their preparation and how they go about their business. They came out ready to go.”
