MIDLAND, Mich. — A win Sunday put the TinCaps above .500 at home.
The struggles on the road continued Tuesday.
A four-run fourth inning doomed the Fort Wayne TinCaps in an 8-2 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday at Dow Diamond.
It was the eighth consecutive road loss for the TinCaps (13-25 second half, 46-60 overall), who fell to 20-34 away from Parkview Field. Their last road win came by way of a 12-1 triumph over the Burlington Bees on July 12.
Great Lakes (23-15, 66-39), an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, added to its 2-1 lead in the fourth as Luke Heyer knocked in a pair of runs on a double to right field. James Outman followed with a two-run homer, putting the Loons on top, 6-1.
Heyer homered in the sixth inning for his team-leading 12th of the season as Great Lakes extended the advantage to 7-2 after the TinCaps scored a run in the fifth. The Loons added their final run in the eighth on a Matt Cogen single.
Dan Robinson, Outman and Heyer had two hits each for Great Lakes, which had an 8-6 edge over Fort Wayne in that category.
The Loons never trailed as they grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Jacob Amaya drove in Justin Yurchak on a groundout, and Robinson singled to score Chris Roller.
Fort Wayne trimmed the margin in half on an attempted double steal in the third inning. Luke Becker got caught in a rundown between first and second base, allowing Tyler Benson to score in the process.
Trailing 6-1 in the fifth inning, Benson bounced out to second base in scoring Juan Fernandez, who led off the frame with a single to center field.
Fernandez ended his day with two hits, and Justin Lopez had the only extra-base hit, a double, for Fort Wayne. Lee Solomon, Becker and Benson had hits as well.
TinCap starting pitcher Sam Keating suffered his fifth loss in his last seven starts. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowed six earned runs on six hits while striking out a pair and walking three. In those seven starts, covering 32 innings dating back to June 22, Keating has allowed 33 earned runs for a 9.28 ERA. He’s struck out 16 compared to 15 walks, and opposing hitters are batting .321 against him in that span.
His last victory came June 12 at the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Right-handed pitcher Moises Lugo will make the first start as a TinCap when the four-game series with the Loons resumes at 7:05 p.m. tonight. The 20-year-old from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, was transferred to Fort Wayne from the Arizona League Padres on Sunday. He threw one scoreless inning of relief on Monday, his appearance for Fort Wayne.
Great Lakes will counter with Jose Martinez, who is 8-1 in 20 appearances with 10 starts covering 90 innings. He has a 3.10 ERA with 77 strikeouts.
