ROCKFORD, Ohio — The Indians dropped their league opener.
In game two, they didn’t even give their opponent a chance.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team grabbed control early Thursday and cruised to a 48-18 victory over the host Parkway Panthers.
The Tribe (4-2, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference), who lost to Versailles on a buzzer-beater last week, had an eight-point lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 27-10 at halftime. It held the Panthers to six points or fewer in every quarter.
Paige Fortkamp scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first half. She hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Whitley Rammel added eight points, Alli Vaughn scored seven, and Val Muhlenkamp and Olivia Patch each had six.
Gabrielle Stober paced Parkway with a game-high 13 points.
JC swimmers fall
OSSIAN — Jay County High School’s girls swim team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday 92-84 to the host Norwell Knights. The boys team slipped to 0-4 with a 126-54 defeat.
Eliza Bader and Ashlyn Dow each won two events for the Patriot girls, who also trailed the Knights at the season-opening Norwell Invitational. Bader’s wins came with times of 25.9 in the 50-yard freestyle and 1 minute, 3.67 seconds, in the 100 butterfly, while Dow posted winning times of 59.72 in the 100 freestyle and 2:24.54 in the 200 individual medley.
Mara Bader took the top spot in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.28.
Earning runner-up finishes for the boys were Kyle Sanders (200 IM, 500 freestyle), Chase McFarland (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Griffin Mann (100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke).
Eagles lose
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team suffered its second consecutive loss Thursday by a 50-41 score to visiting Muncie Northside. The seventh graders lost 40-28.
Parker Nichols had 21 points to lead the Eagle eighth grade squad (4-2), which opened its season with four consecutive wins. Jackson Edwards, Ryan Cross and Liam Garringer each added six points.
Keegan Wasson’s 17 points were a team high for the WJMS seventh grade team (2-4). Ben Crouch followed with five points.
