Wrestling team splits meet with Yorktown, Delta

The Jay County High School wrestling team split a pair of home matches on Tuesday with the Yorktown Tigers and Delta Eagles.

The Patriots (11-5), who host Homestead on Thursday for senior night, defeated Yorktown 60-18 before falling to Delta, 47-33.

Dyllan Garringer, Thomas Hemmelgarn, George Lykins, Mason Winner and Dawson Frasher each went 2-0 for the Patriots. Lita Chowning and Ryan Snider both won their only match, while Dylan Racster, Zakk Atkins, Ian Ruiz, Garrett Mann and Jordan Schricker were all 1-1 on the day.

Blayne Daniels and Logan Kelley lost one their only match. Cooper Jacks and Camron Gage were winless in two tries on Tuesday.



Tigers top Patriots

YORKTOWN — The Yorktown Tigers swam past the Jay County boys and girls swim teams on Tuesday.

Jay County’s girls fell 120-60, and the boys dropped a score of 132-44.

Eliza Bader accounted for the only individual JCHS wins. The sophomore won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 2.07 seconds, before a victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.57.

The 200 medley relay team of Vivienne Kunkler, Erica Hathaway, Ashlyn Dow and Bader won in 1:47.67.



Eagles blast Bears

DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade girls basketball team blanked the Monroe Central Golden Bears on Tuesday, 52-0.

The seventh grade Eagles lost, 14-9.

Abbie Fields led the Eagle eighth graders with 18 points, and Gabi Bilbrey chipped in 15 points. 

Paige Mumbower was third on the team with seven points while Grace Shimp and Taylor Braun contributed four points apiece as all seven team members scored.

Jozey Shimp’s four points were tops for the WJMS seventh grade squad. Laila Waddell and Angel Clairday tossed in two points each, and Alaysha Brannon finished with one point.

 

Chief boys split

East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams split with the Muncie Northside Titans on Tuesday.

The eighth graders won, 53-45, while the seventh graders fell 45-32.

Bennett Weitzel lit up the scoreboard for 22 points for the Chief eighth graders (11-1). Josh Dowlen contributed 10 points while Dusty Pearson and Carter Link had eight points each.

Zach McAbee and Sam Myers both scored 10 points in the loss for the seventh grade Chiefs (7-5). Justin DeHoff added five points.
