FORT RECOVERY — The Indians struggled during the second quarter.
They only scored four points, and gave up 13 just like the first period.
They nearly came all the way back to win.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team had its second-half rally fall short in a 42-40 Midwest Athletic Conference setback Thursday to the St. John’s Blue Jays at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
The Indians fell to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in MAC play, while the Blue Jays moved to 8-5 (2-3 MAC).
After trailing 13-11 heading to the second quarter, Fort Recovery found itself behind 26-15 at halftime.
A 14-point effort in the third quarter trimmed the margin to just six, 35-29. A pair of Blue Jay free throws made it 42-35 late in the fourth quarter and the Indians got close on a 3-pointer from Kierra Wendel and a Paige Fortkamp basket, but they ran out of time.
Val Muhlenkamp led the Indians with 11 points, and Wendel was second with nine points. Brooke Kahlig contributed eight points. Olivia Patch and Muhlenkamp finished with 13 and 11 rebounds respectively.
Star boys win
BERNE — The South Adams boys swim team defeated the Coldwater Cavaliers on Thursday, 97-58.
South Adams’ girls fell, 101-53.
Kam Yoder had a pair of wins for the Starfire boys, placing first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly races. Ethan Duff (200 individual medley), Colin Alberson (500 freestyle), Parker Collingsworth (100 backstroke) and Curtis Sprunger (100 breaststroke) each won their respective events as well.
The 200 medley relay team of Isaac Gorrell, Collingsworth, Sprunger and Yoder was victorious, as was the 200 freestyle relay team of Aidan Von Gunten, Nic Stuber, Gorrell and Yoder.
South Adams’ girls got wins from Ashley LeFever in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle events, while Hannah Neuenschwander was first in the 100 butterfly.
Isabella Bailey, Isabel Von Gunten, Neuenschwander and LeFever teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay.
