The Patriots got yet another win on Thursday.

And a senior inched closer to a scoring milestone in her second-to-last home game.

Shelby Caldwell scored 22 points and sits just five shy of 1,000 for her career as the Jay County High School girls basketball team disposed of the Delta Eagles on Thursday, 55-36.

It was the sixth win in a row for the Patriots (14-7), who have won 12 of their last 13 games and meet Southern Wells tonight before hosting Richmond on Tuesday for the season finale.

Jay County led 15-7 after the first quarter before exploding for 20 points before halftime for a 35-18 advantage at the break. The score was 45-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hannah Phillips scored 10 points to join Caldwell in double digits, while Kendra Muhlenkamp was close with eight points.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 25-17. Macey Weitzel and Aubrie Schwieterman led the squad with eight points each.



FR stumbles

NEW KNOXVILLE, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team didn’t allow a point in the first quarter but had a tough time shutting down the New Knoxville Rangers on Thursday in a 37-24 loss. 

Fort Recovery (6-8, 1-4 Midwest Athletic Conference) was ahead 6-0 after the first quarter and went into halftime leading 9-5. But the Rangers (9-5, 2-3 MAC) rallied for a one-point advantage, 16-15, heading into the fourth period before scoring 21 points in the final eight minutes.

Val Muhlenkamp’s eight points were tops for the Tribe, which also got six points from Kierra Wendel. Alli Vaughn and Brooke Kahlig tossed in four points each while Olivia Patch had two points.



SA boys tie

HARTFORD CITY — The South Adams boys swim team finished even with the host Blackford Bruins on Thursday with both squads scoring 85 points apiece.

The Starfire girls fell, 78-67.

Colin Alberson and Kam Yoder each won a pair of events for the SAHS boys. Alberson won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races while Yoder was first in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Isaac Gorrell (100 freestyle) and Curtis Sprunger (100 breaststroke) also won their respective events.

Claire Burson (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Ashley LeFever (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) both had two victories. Isabel Von Gunten beat the field in the 100 freestyle and Michelle Sandoval touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke.

South Adams’ girls also won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle events.
