BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Ryan Weathers was his sharp self yet again.
The Hot Rods broke through against the bullpen.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps had their three-run lead slip away on Wednesday in a 6-5 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark.
It snapped the TinCaps’ three-game winning streak against the Hot Rods. The ’Caps swept a road series from the Tampa Bay Rays affiliate June 11 through 13.
Weathers, the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft who MLB.com lists as the 70th-best prospect, threw a career-high 81 pitches and allowed just one run. He struck out five and walked one while surrendering just three hits in five innings.
When he exited the game, Fort Wayne (11-20 second half, 44-55 overall) had a 4-1 lead. Bowling Green (20-11, 59-42) scored a pair of runs off Cody Tyler in the bottom of the sixth inning, and added two more off Jose Quezada in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 advantage.
Dwanya Williams-Sutton hit an RBI single in the eighth to score Jawuan Harris and tie the game.
Osmy Gregorio put the Hot Rods back out front with an RBI base hit in the bottom of the eighth.
All six of Bowling Green’s runs came with two outs.
Williams-Sutton collected three hits to match his career high, and Harris’ double in the top of the fifth inning was Fort Wayne’s only extra-base hit.
Quezada was charged with the loss, giving up three runs — two earned — on four hits in two relief innings. He struck out a pair and walked three.
After Bowling Green scored in the home half of the first inning, Fort Wayne built its lead in part to a three-run third. Tucupita Marcano scored on a successful double steal with Williams-Sutton, and Agustin Ruiz recorded his team-leading 48th RBI of the season. He ranks ninth in all of the Midwest League. Justin Lopez also drove in a run.
The TinCaps added one more run in the fifth inning when Harris scored on a Williams-Sutton single.
Bowling Green’s Matthew Liberatore, who was picked 16th overall in last year’s draft and is the No. 44 prospect, couldn’t quite match Weathers’ outing. Liberatore allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits. He fanned two and walked a pair.
The second game of the three-game series is slated for 7:35 p.m. tonight. Sam Keating (3-6, 6.53 ERA) is the probable starter for Fort Wayne, while Bowling Green is expected to counter with Miller Hogan (1-3, 3.48 ERA).
