BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — A pair of four-run innings and a mostly dormant offense spelled defeat for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in a 9-3 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Thursday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Bowling Green (21-11 second half, 60-42 overall), a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate that sits atop the Midwest League Eastern Division standings, broke a 1-1 tie in the home half of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Ford Proctor, his second three-bagger of the year. Russ Olive and Osmy Gregorio also drove in runs.
After Fort Wayne (11-21, 44-56) trimmed the margin to 5-2 with a Dwayna Williams-Sutton RBI double in the third inning, the score remained there until the bottom of the fifth frame.
Jonathan Aranda hit an RBI double to make it 6-2, and Robert Alvarez roped a two-run single to balloon the advantage to 8-2. The Hot Rods tacked on their final run on an Izzy Wilson single to right field.
Williams-Sutton, who finished with two of the TinCaps’ five hits, knocked in the second of his two RBIs in the eighth inning but Fort Wayne wasn’t able to get any more offense.
Jawuan Harris also had a pair of singles and stole two bases. He has now successfully swiped 25 bags this season, which ranks third in the MWL.
Fort Wayne pitcher Sam Keating had his third straight start of fewer than five innings after matching his career-long of seven innings on July 4.
The 20-year-old right-hander from Fort Myers, Florida, allowed eight runs — seven earned — on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in just 4 1/3 innings to dip to 3-7 on the year. In his last three starts, Keating has given up 21 runs — all but one earned — on 21 hits, including three home runs. He has a 16.36 ERA in that span with six strikeouts and a half dozen walks.
