FORT WAYNE — Rain pushed back the start of the game nearly 90 minutes.

All it did was delay another solid outing from Joey Cantillo.

The 19-year-old Hawaiian turned in his third consecutive quality start in limiting the Dayton Dragons to just one run as the Fort Wayne TinCaps prevailed, 5-1, in the series finale Monday at Parkview Field.

It marked the third straight home series win for the TinCaps (15-21 second half, 43-63 overall), who outscored the Dragons (13-23, 46-58) by a 19-3 margin after allowing 13 runs in the first two innings Saturday.

Cantillo, the No. 19 prospect in the San Diego Padres organization, scattered four hits over six innings while striking out six and walking a pair.

A quality start is defined as a game in which a pitcher allows three runs or fewer in at least six innings of work. It was the sixth such game in the last seven starts for Cantillo, a left-hander who is 4-1 in that span with 58 strikeouts, seven walks and a 1.88 ERA in 43 innings.

After Monday’s outing, Cantillo improved to 8-3 on the year, lowered his ERA to 2.05 and upped his season strikeout total to 121. He leads the Midwest League in both ERA and strikeouts.

Fort Wayne’s offense got started in the second inning when Ethan Skender bounced a single through the left side of the infield to score Blake Hunt and Justin Lopez, who both singled. Also in the second, Tucupita Marcano knocked in Michael Curry on a groundout to second base.

After the Dragons, an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, trimmed the margin with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning, Dwanya Williams-Sutton got the run back for the TinCaps with a solo home run to center field. It was his fifth of the season, and extended his on-base streak to 17 consecutive games.

Williams-Sutton also got hit by a pitch for the 20th time this year, which leads the MWL.

Two frames later, Curry got plunked by a pitch from Adrian Rodriguez with bases loaded to bring in the game’s final run.

Lee Solomon, Agustin Ruiz and Tyler Benson also added singles for the TinCaps.

Fort Wayne hits the road and heads north for a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. The Loons, who won the MWL Eastern Division for the first half, lead the league with a 64-39 record.

Ryan Weathers, the Padres’ No. 8 prospect, takes to the hill against Ryan Pepiot for the Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers).
