FORT WAYNE — The TinCaps had no problem getting the first two outs of the fourth and fifth innings.
Getting the third was the issue. The Captains made them pay.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps allowed five runs in two separate innings, all with two outs, in a 10-2 loss to the Lake County Captains on Thursday at Parkview Field.
Lake County (35-24), an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, prevented the TinCaps (28-29) from sweeping the series and reaching .500 for the first time in a week.
The Captains had runners at the corners with no outs in the top of the fourth inning, but Ruben Cardenas was caught trying to steal second and Josh Rolette grounded out to Lee Solomon at second base.
The Captains then plated a run on a Mitch Reeves double and a Solomon error. Two batters later, Quentin Holmes hit a three-run home run 376 feet to left field off TinCap starter Sam Keating.
Again in the fifth, Fort Wayne got two quick outs on infield grounders, but the next six Lake County batters reached base. Jesse Berardi and Hosea Nelson hit back-to-back RBI singles. Holmes, the Captains’ No. 9 hitter, knocked in two runs on a triple to left field as he finished with five RBIs after totaling just eight through his first 47 games of the season.
Keating was solid through the first three innings. Only once, a Jose Fermin fly out to right field on the first pitch of the game, did a ball leave the infield prior to the Captains breaking through in the fourth.
He ended up allowing 10 runs — six earned — on 10 hits with three walks. He failed to strike out a batter for the second time in three starts. He’s now 2-3 on the year.
The TinCaps salvaged a little bit of offense in the home half of the fifth.
Justin Lopez hit a two-out soft fly ball to left field to score Solomon, who singled to begin the inning. After Michael Curry walked to load the bases, Aldemar Burgos scored on a wild pitch.
Fort Wayne, which has gone nearly a year without a three-game sweep at home, finished its homestand 2-4. The TinCaps travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on the Dragons for four games before heading to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for three.
