Tankers get 6th straight crown
Depth carries Jay County to victory in WVC?relays
Wells County had almost double the number of wins as Jay County did.
It still wasn’t enough to knock off the host team.
Despite only winning 16 events, almost half that of the Wells County squad, the Jay County Summer Swim Team won the Wabash Valley Conference Relays for the sixth straight year on Saturday at Jay County High School.
The host team relied on its depth to score 2,096 points, leaving Wells County more than 300 points behind in second. Adams County, which was a combined team of the Adams Central, Bellmont and South Adams clubs, scored 1,170 for third. Blackford totaled 488 for fourth.
The youngest and oldest girl age groups for Jay County paved the way, as the 8-and-younger as well as 15-and-older squads swept all five relays.
Erica Hathaway, Natalie Blakely and Vivienne Kunkler had their hand in all five wins for the 15-and-older girls. They teamed with Rieley Brewster to take the top spot in the butterfly relay, backstroke relay and freestyle relay. Elayna Paro joined the trio for victories in the medley and backstroke relays.
Maria Laux was part of each winning relay for the 8-and-younger girls, joining Kali Wendel in four of them and Jordyn Champ and Kenna Arnold for three apiece.
Avery Snow and Elly Byrum was part of two relay wins, and Lila Wendel one.
The 8-and-younger boys quartet of Murphy Link, Ben Fisher, Tony Beiswanger and Karsen Kuhn won the medley, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle relays in their age group.
Jay County is set to host Fort Recovery at 6 p.m. tonight at Portland Water Park. In the event of inclement weather, it will be moved to JCHS.
