PASCO, Wash. — Nick Thwaits was a little sharper on the mound Thursday.

He struck out one out of every three batters he faced.

He exited with a lead, but the bullpen gave it up and he’s still without his first professional win.

Thwaits, a 2018 Fort Recovery High School graduate, matched his career-high strikeout total for the Tri-City Dust Devils as it held off the Hillsboro Hops at Gesa Stadium on Thursday, 3-2.

The right-handed former Indian got his second start for the Dust Devils (3-4), and went four innings. He scattered five hits, including a pair of doubles, and allowed two earned runs. He struck out seven and walked one of the 18 batters he faced.

Of the 71 pitches he threw, 46 went for strikes.

Tri-City scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to break a 2-2 tie, and that’s where the score remained when Thwaits’ gave way to Jason Blanchard for the fifth inning. Blanchard gave up three runs — two earned — on two hits while recording just two outs.

In two starts this year for the Dust Devils, Thwaits has a 4.32 ERA in 8 1/3 innings. He’s fanned 11, walked two and allowed five runs, four of them earned, on six hits.
