PG-14 took control before Inman U-Loc got a chance to pick up its bats. The visiting team never let the lead slip.
PG-14’s three-run first inning set the tone as it went on to a 7-5 victory Thursday over Inman to win the Portland Junior League Willie Mays baseball tournament title.
Maddox Huffman was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and two RBIs for PG-14, which was up 5-1 after two innings. Inman closed the gap to two runs in the third inning, and both teams scored twice in the fifth for the final margin.
Chase Ninde had a single and two RBIs for PG-14, and Leighton Brown recorded a single and two runs.
Huffman and Snow pitched PG-14 to the victory, with the latter racking up eight strikeouts in three innings of work.
Gavin Byrum was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run for Inman in the loss. Grant Wendel doubled, drove in a run and scored three times.
FR falls short
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery ACME baseball team came up short Thursday in a 2-1 loss to Parkway.
Fort Recovery, which also lost 10-0 Wednesday to St. Henry, fell behind 1-0 in the fourth inning. It pulled even in the sixth, only to give up the game-winning run in the top of the seventh.
Garrett Faller and Derek Lochtefeld each had a pair of hits for Fort Recovery in the defeat.
Dillan Evers struck out four batters in four innings on the mound.
The Indians managed just one hit in the Wednesday loss to St. Henry.
