GENEVA, Ohio — The Indians’ 4x200-meter relay team was at the bottom of the podium at the state finals in June.

On Saturday, it stood at the top.

Fort Recovery High School’s boys 4x200 relay team claimed the Division II/III state title on Saturday at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Indoor State Championships at SPIRE Institute.

Robby LeFevre, Jacob Acheson, Riley Pearson and Owen Moorman had a time of 1 minute, 31.33 seconds, to finish first, a mere four-hundredths of a second ahead of the quartet from Chaminade Julienne.

LeFevre also had a pair of third-place finishes in the 60 and 200 dash races. His time of 7.04 seconds was two spots behind Tre Tucker of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, and he ended the 200 dash in 22.31 seconds. Kalida’s Josh Verhoff won in 21.68.

Drew Muhlenkamp finished fourth in the 400 dash in 50.48, and Jared Timmerman’s leap of 19 feet was 13th in long jump.

Freshman Megan Abels, one of only two freshmen to qualify for the state meet, was 20th with her height of 10 feet.



Shannon sets record

MARION — Kinsey Shannon set a new school record in the 60-meter dash for the Jay County girls track team as it opened its indoor season Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan.

Shannon, a sophomore, had a time of 8.4 seconds, breaking the mark classmate Calli Stigleman set last season. Stigleman was one spot behind Shannon in 12th, and Shea Bailey was 23rd in 8.68 seconds.

Kendal Garringer finished seventh in high jump with a height of 4 feet, 8 inches.

In the 60 hurdles, Grace Saxman was eighth in 10.51 seconds, Abby Benter placed 18th and Sara Hemmelgarn was 24th.

Kassidy Fenning finished 19th in shot put and Shelby Clark was 31st.

The 4x400 relay team of Renee Omstead, Ashlyn Dow, Saxman and Shannon was seventh, and the 4x400 relay team of Stigleman, Dow, Bailey and Omstead ended eighth.

Vanessa Ong, Raven Weaver, Lindy Wood and Sophia Fugiett were ninth in the 4x800 relay.

Two sessions to register

There will be two registration sessions for the 2019 Portland Junior League baseball and softball seasons.

PJL is open to boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 15.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and March 16 at Jay Community Center.

Eagles 10th at invite

MONROE — West Jay Middle School’s wrestling team finished 10th on Saturday in the Adams Central Invitational.

Landon Weaver, a 275-pounder, was the only Eagle wrestler to finish in the top six. He finished fourth.
