Besser gets NEIBA player of the year
Starfire senior named as inaugural recipient
The season accolades for Grant Besser have begun.
Besser, a South Adams High School senior, was named inaugural Northeast Indiana Baseball Association player of the year on Monday, the NEIBA announced.
The numbers at the plate and on the mound for the Starfire southpaw are staggering. He’s batting .455, which is second on the team, and he is also second in home runs (four) and RBIs (19), third in on base percentage (.530), fourth in doubles (three) and has the team’s only triple. He has a team-best 24 RBIs.
This comes a year after he batted .495 with 18 doubles and six home runs.
Besser’s stats on the mound have been eye-popping. In 13 games, he has a 4-0 record and has converted all four of his save opportunities. He has allowed five runs — two earned — for an ERA of just 0.39. In 35 2/3 innings, he has allowed 10 hits, issued four walks and recorded 87 strikeouts, an average of more than two strikeouts per inning.
He recently surpassed the 400 career strikeout milestone.
As a junior, he was 10-0 with six saves and set a school record with 133 strikeouts.
Besser will be honored at the NEIBA Hall of Fame banquet Sunday at Classic Cafe Catering and Event Center in Fort Wayne.
