ANDERSON — A former Patriot will forever be honored as a Raven.
Erin Smith, a 2001 Jay County High School graduate, will be inducted into the Anderson University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Smith was a four-time Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference all-conference honoree, and was the individual tournament champion during the 2004 season. She claimed the latter honor on the first hole of a playoff.
In the spring of 2005, Smith qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship, becoming the first Raven to accomplish the feat. Smith ended that season tied for 44th in the nation.
Smith joins Larry Davy and Jerry Helvey as 2019 Hall of Fame inductees. The ceremony will take place Oct. 19.
Jay routs Rebels
LYNN — Jay County’s volleyball team made easy work of the Randolph Southern Rebels on Monday in a 25-8, 25-4, 25-9.
The win moved the Patriots to 13-5 on the year, while the Rebels fall to 3-19.
Natalie Miles led the JCHS offense with 12 kills while also adding seven digs and three blocks. Hallie Fields was second on the team with eight kills, and Sara Hemmelgarn tallied six kills. Hemmelgarn’s three blocks was tied for the team high with Miles, and she also matched Miles’ seven digs.
Alana Kunkler chipped in a team-best seven aces.
Pacie Denney and Izzy Rodgers had 18 and 10 assists, respectively.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 25-11, 25-12. Abbie Fields finished with four kills, four aces and 12 digs, while JaiDi Brunson tallied six digs, six assists and three aces.
Patriots shut out
The Jay County junior varsity football team lost to the Woodlan Warriors on Monday, 36-0.
The Warriors scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters to build their advantage.
Dakota Lairson led JCHS with 80 rushing yards. Ramon Bravo and Ben Nichols each had two tackles for loss.
Eagles run in meet
HAGERSTOWN — West Jay Middle School’s boys and girls cross country teams competed in a meet Monday at Hagerstown.
Monroe Central and Muncie Burris also ran in the meet. West Jay’s boys totaled 94 points. Other team scores were not provided.
Jackson Edwards led the WJMS boys by finishing 11th. Lukes Powers (17th), Trevin Dunnington (20th), Kamon Grubbs (22nd) and Aiden Stephens (24th) also scored for the Eagles.
Makinsey Murphy was the top Eagle girl as she placed sixth, one spot ahead of Hailey Ayala. Lucy Raines was ninth and Sarah McClain finished 20th.
Chiefs split
SELMA — The East Jay Middle School sixth grade volleyball teams split with Selma on Monday.
The A team lost 25-15, 25-21, while the B squad won its match 25-18, 25-11.
Kayla Jetmore led the A team with three aces, and Mya Kunkler chipped in one kill. Lilly Johnson and Maria Hemmelgarn had one ace apiece.
Kendel Rowles led the B squad by serving up eight aces, and Jamie Davis was second with three aces.
